| I have used the plug in water buckets, can't remember the brand, but love them, in 40 below weather they kept the water above freezing. |

Location: between here and there | We have them and drag them out every winter! Keeps the horses drinking well and they don't freeze. Make sure you keep the plugs where they can't reach them. Don't know the brand, but we've had them for years. |

Location: Riding Crackhead. | I've got one for the dogs and cats. For the horses, if I do keep them in the barn I just use rubber buckets. Its an unheated barn but insulated well. By morning some of the buckets will have ice on the top in the morning but you can always see where they break the ice and keep on drinking. Its -50 with the wind chill right now but was 10 above in the barn when we got all the horses in there stall an hour ago. I don't have much problem with their buckets freezing. I'd worry about having that many electric buckets going. I'm a worry wart though. |

| 2nd winter using a heated tub - bigger than a bucket, smaller than a water tank. It works good for me. I can fill it up with a bucket once or twice a day and don't have to drag out the hose. Only have 2-3 head though. |

They hold 16 gallons and work great. Even nights where it gets in the upper 20's you can fill them up leave them plugged up for a couple hours and water is still unfrozen in the morninng. I have had them keep water ice free in unheated barn at -5

Location: Slipping down the slope of old age. Boo hoo. | I use the 16 gallon heated water buckets -- the ones that plug in. This is the 6th or 7th year for the 3 buckets I currently have. Love them. Clean them and store them after each winter. Sure makes a big difference in how much water the horses drink. I re-fill each morning / evening so that helps me keep an eye on how much they drink. Well worth purchase price.... got mine from Country Supply. They had the best price back when I bought mine. I've seen them at Atwoods recently. I pull them out and begin using them as soon as temp starts dropping below 40 each year. |

ETA: Mine are this brand I believe but I sure didn't pay that much, we have had them a long time.

| I got mine from Atwoods 10 years ago. They work very well in these temps. Still have them even though I rarely stall anymore. I let a new neighbor borrow one and a blanket during the first cold snap. I don't care about the blanket but I want my bucket back..lol |

Location: A roping pen near you!! | I used the electric water buckets for years when I only had one horse now we moved and have 3 horses and no outlets close to the stalls. So we bought these and they are awesome. They don't use any electric so that saves money and I don't have to worry about anyone chewing on the cords. I would highly reccomend someone buying these. I just went to the barn and there was only a slite skim of ice on the lid but a horse could break it real easy. We have the one in the top link. We didn't pay nearly that much for them. We got them from Straight A's Ranch Supply (ranchcity.com)

Two things- ideally I dont want any ice- in order to keep them drining but I guess a thin coat is better than the heavy thick ice. But I love the warm water provided by the electric. My second issue is with these 5 gallon buckets, my horse cant get his head all the way down to the bottom so it doesnt seem great to me?
I do love the fact of no electric but those are my concerns. |

I agree and my horses drink way more than 5 gallons every 12 hours |

For those with the bigger bucket I drilled a hole to run the cord through at stall so there is no cord the horse can get too |

Location: Along the Caney River | We have the green heated buckets. We have had them for several years now and they work great. Ordered them from stateline I think but Atwoods carries them. We have the large ones. Water is never frozen and is mild not cold to the touch so horses drank more. Don' t know what we did without them! Oh Yeah, had to thaw buckest of frozen water in my utility room! |

| I have one insulated water bucket that I went and bought before the cold weather hit, I have two more on order. So far-I LOVE IT!
Just about no ice in the bucket with these super cold temps. The top has a few ice chips in it, but that is it.
I would rather have the insulated buckets for peace of mind...I would A.)worry about fire hazard or B.) Worry about them getting shocked/chewing the cord in some way. |
