| I think this has been posted before but I could not find the thread. How much horse do you expect to get for 5000. I know that is very broad question. |

Location: North MS | We have totally different opinions- I would expect a well broke and finished 3D or 4D horse. Registered.
Or a 2D with issues or inconsistent.
Possibly a bred out of the wazoo yearling or two year old.

| I posted the original thread.
I'm in the Midwest. I think it differs on location.
A younger horse (6-9) that is running consistent 3D that might need better seasoning. Depending on bloodlines I would expect to add $1,000 to $2,000 more.

| I also posted on the other thread. For 4,500 I got a well bred (proven parents and siblings) gelding that was started on the pattern and breezing through nicely. Has a solid foundation (wtc, sidepass, STOP, back, rollbacks, leg yields, etc.) just needed to be seasoned.
Up here I also sold my 2D barrel mare (14 years old, completely sound, finished in all patterns, same good foundation, quiet, sane and a kid could ride) for $4,500. Crazy how much it differs between areas. |

Location: You never know where I will show up...... | You can buy a pretty nice young prospect for that. A very well bred weanling or yearling for sure. I've bought several OTT in the $2500-5000 range. If you don't mind riding color breeds you can usually get some bargains on running bred Paints or Apps. The winningest horse I've ever had was a solid App mare, that was a race winner and a grand daughter of Leaving Memories & Bugs Alive in 75. She won more than what I paid for her at the first futurity I ran her at.

I agree with shopping around, there are some really great deals out there right now, just have to patient and spend your money wisely.

| Apparently for $800 and some elbow grease you can have a futurity winner! |

Absolutely love this but I have to consider you a very lucky individual. Not very many times do you get a diamond in the rough, so to speak! Congrats again! |

| Well, when I get ready to shop for another one, I am HOPING to find a well-broke 5-8 yr old, probably not patterned - registered - but not a "brand name" bloodline.

Location: SoCal | We sold a mare this summer for $5000 that was easily worth double as a barrel horse, but we had to sell quickly and she ended up being sold as a trail horse. Very broke, kind of marish, soft soles but so long as she had shoes she was fine, and after about 8 years of cutting, her hocks were still very good and she was sound. About 13 years old, but nice looking horse. I had her running 3D-4D within a month or two with a ton of room to improve (she didn't know how to run when we got her, but she was built to run) and was shaping her to be my jackpot and rodeo horse before she was sold. Lovely mare and wish we hadn't sold her, regret it on my part, but we needed to sell a horse quickly and she was the most sellable. Horses also don't sell for much in this area, what sold her was that she was broke. |

Location: North Dakota | For 5K I can get a fantastic horse with a great handle and no issues but it will not be finished on barrels to the point you can just sit and be a passanger and let the horse work alone. There are lots of really nice horses for 5K that have never seen a barrel that could do better than most barrel horses priced for 15K or more. I think the problem is that lots of barrel horses are not properly trained, they don't take the time to put a solid handle and good foundation on the horse before running it over and over again st shows. It take years to make a good barrel horse that is properly trained that can go and make an automatic run. |
