I would like to one day try and break away rope.  I was wondering if you guys who do both do you have a roping, and a barrel saddle?  A combination saddle?  Or do you just use your barrel saddle?

I would also like to pull logs for exercise.  Do you guys that use this to condition horses use roping saddles?  barrel saddles and just maybe wrap around the pommel instead of the horn?

Thanks

I would use a combination saddle.  IMO Barrel saddles are not made to pull things with the horn.  for Breakaway you should use a Combination saddle or a Calf Roping saddle to get you in the best position to rope fast.

I have a combo saddle and a rope saddle.  I only heel and barrel race.  Bought the combo saddle first (it's a camarillo) because I thought it was the only saddle I would ever need, well, I have 2 horses so I bought a rope saddle when I heel.  I do feel like my rope saddle works better for roping and is tougher than the combo saddle, though I'm sure it would work great for breakaway and dragging logs, plus, I would bet you could find a used one pretty reasonable.

I have a roping saddle and a barrel saddle. Would never rope in my barrel saddle its too lite. I have a Tyler Magnus reinsman roping saddle and it is a tank! Not only do u risk breaking your tree but you can also injure your horse if you break your saddle tree - not worth the risk for me!

I have a combo made by Tod Slone.  I love it.  I was roping in an old Stoney calf roping saddle, but tried my moms barrel/rope combo and never went back.  I was able to stay up in it where I was falling behind In the Stoney.

Depending on how heavy your log is, the combo would be fine....but I prefer using a rope saddle not the combo to drag logs.

Here's a pic of the saddle.  Love that it's on a ladies tree...much narrower and easier on the hips!!

Dragging logs...I would use a roping saddle.  A barrel saddle "might" be fine, but it's pretty easy to loosen the tree up in one doing this...and that could make it no longer fit your horse.

Breakaway roping out of a barrel saddle...I've done it.  Is it ideal?  Maybe not.  Barrel Saddles typically have a higher front end.
If it's a barrel saddle that keeps your feet in front of you and sits you on your pockets...it will be challenging to rope out of, as you need to be able to get up over your horse to rope.

I do have an old trail/roping saddle I could use for dragging logs.

Mainly I guess I would like to hear about what you use for breakaway.  And if you use a combo saddle, how do they do for barrel racing?

My combo saddle is fine for barrels as well.  It's got a fairly high cantle so I'm able to sit deep.  Not a whole lot of contact though....you lose that "close to the horse" feeling a little.  The horn is short too, if you are used to a high one...

I want my next saddle to be exactly like this one.  I should probably quit stealing my moms saddle at some point.  I just don't like how heavy even ladies Ropers are!  I love how light his one is, but it's sturdy.

That was one of my concerns, cause I do like a tall horn n high cantle...

Well, I thought I needed a barrel saddle, one with a bigger seat because as you can see in my picture I'm not very little, something that would keep my feet ahead of me and was lighter for my horse, so I bought a barrel saddle, loved how it fit my horse and me, felt like I had lots of room in it.  That barrel saddle cost me so much this summer, I tipped so many $ barrels it isn't even funny.  Lost a little tiny bit of weight and went back to my camarillo combo for my district finals and had 2 nice clean runs, rode like I was meant to.  As far as the camarillo combo, the only thing that is different is that the swells are maybe just a little lower than on the barrel saddle, horn is taller (but wider) cantle is the same.
