I normally do mine online....but is it worth it to have an accountant take a look? I've talked to some coworkers and they have someone do theirs and they say they always get more money returned than they would had they done it on their own...thoughts?
Just wondering what others do. |

Location: Jersey Girl | I do my own but mine are pretty straight forward. If I had a business or if mine were more involved then I would find a good tax preparer (not H&R Block or Jackson Hewitt. IMO they are the worst!!) |

Location: Oklahoma | We use accountants as my husband is involved with some family businesses and we file jointly.
We usually always get $ back (but we also withhold extra since we have no dependents), the only downfall is sometimes they file an extension on us because they stay busy. |

| I use an accountant. Sometimes mine are easy, sometimes they are not. This year they are not. We've used the same accountant for years and she is licensed in most states - which is good because I move more than the normal person.
Her rates are super reasonable and it's worth my piece of mind should I ever get audited to have someone to help me through it. |

| I use an accountant and always get money back. He itemizes horse expenses and the main thing is that I never get audited. |

Location: PA | We usually do ours online but last year I tried something different just to see. I did them online but did not submit them and then had an accountant do them. No difference in refund. This year I will just do them on my own. Ours are fairly straight forward. |

Location: The South | My mom always did theirs with Turbotax or something similar because theirs was pretty straightforward. After she passed away I started doing my Dad's for him, Turbotax makes it so easy! But for me and my husband, we use his Dad as he's a CPA and it made a difference last year. The first time his dad ran our numbers we owed $20k and I almost had a heart attack. So I went home and 'played' with the numbers and got it down to owing $16k, and his dad ultimately got it down to $14k. Still depressing but a little better. We changed our withholdings for this year so hopefully it won't be as bad this year! |

Location: Kansas | I do mine through turbo tax, pretty simple...I just filed mine last week....it's free, easy to use...pretty cut and dry.
I also do my state taxes online for free through the state's website. I've been doing it that way for years. |

I use TurboTax as well. I itemize my horse expenses with it and it is super easy. I do have a friend that is an accountant so I can ask her if I have questions. |

Location: Phoenix | Those that itemize horse expenses...do you do this when you get a 1099 form like if you win enough, or do you do it regardless? That's a whole other story... |

I asked my father in law about doing that, and he said no way. Something about a hobby tax? I can't remember exactly, but he said every so many years you'd have to show a profit. I said well crap, there's no way I'll ever make a profit at this so I left it at that. |

You could show a profit if you chose to not turn in all your expenses once every 7 years. |

| I used to do mine online, then last year decided to seek a professional.
Online I was going to get a little over $200 back. With the accountant I got a little over $1200. |

| I've never done my own taxes. I've always had entirely too much going on, with multiple W2s, 1099s, farm credits, ag credits, work related write offs, OMG you name it! I am lucky to have found a couple of great accountants that understands agricultural write offs and horse type stuff. My advice is to make sure you find one in a smaller town that the ranchers and such use. They'll be aware of your types of expenses and how to really help you not get hammered. |
