Why do most Ropers saddle their horses at home then haul them down the road like that? Its a common practice around my area. Do any of you guys do that? It doesnt seem like a comfortable ride for the horse and the risk of an injury when loading or unloading is higher.

I don't EVER do that maybe if it's in a slant load trailer with the thingy in between each and every horse (Not sure what you call those, lol) and there's no place to warm up and you have to warm up at your horse at your house and your a little short on time but that'd be the ONLY reason. If it'd be in a 2 horse bumper pull trailer then no. Because, if you have another horse in there with him and they don't like each other and they kick one another they may end up getting his leg caught in the stirrup.

Around here it isn't a ropers deal is a rancher deal.  If my horse isn't saddled in the trailer and I'm standing there with my thumb up my butt saddling my horse while everyone else is already on and gathering cattle.....my azz is grazz.

Mostly I don't do that, occasionally I do. It all depends. Because we (as I'm sure other's do) have a summer pasture and a winter pasture, the trailer is sometimes at one place and the horses are at the other. So while someone is hooking up the trailer at one place, I'll saddle my horse so I'm ready to go. But on the trip home I almost always unsaddle so my horse can cool out well. But we have a slant load/stock type trailer with dividers, so it hasn't ever been a big issue.

^^ YUP! I've been that gal too! The only time we ever haul saddled is going to the pastures ... and then they are all happy horses standing in an open stock trailer together ...

I do it if I'm going somewhere close. I have two arenas about 15 minutes from my house so I usually warm up at home and leave saddled and haul over there. But I never keep saddled on my way home.

I do it if we are headed into town to a roping (less than 1hour away) or if we've got the arena rented. Typically we are running late, so it saves me time because I'm preparing while everyone is running around. I usually hook the left stirrup over the horn so they don't catch it on the way out. We've had to leave the horses saddled after a rodeo in order to make it to the next one on time. I don't have an issue with it. Builds character if anything. I'm all about character and having my horses act like ranch horses.

I also out my stirrups up so they don't get caught. I am ALWAYS late....especially to a barrel race so I love being able to saddle up and leave!

If under 2 hours my barrel horses and rope horses can haul saddled.  I do not have dividers in my trailer - I tie up the stirrups.  Never had an issue. My tack room is in the barn - not the trailer and with the wet weather we have most of the time, it is easier and drier to saddle in the barn.  It is no different than saddling them and tieing them up for a couple of hours.  if we are going to a rodeo or big roping where we do NOT plan  to arrive and go straight to arena, the saddles go in the trailer tack room.

Thanks for the info. I see it all the time but never understood why it was being done. Good explanations! Ive had some crazy horses in the past so im too scared to have them saddled up in the trailer.

If my tack is hanging in the tack room instead of in the trailer then I saddle at home so I dont have to load all my stuff up (and forget something), but I dont usually do it if Im travelling more than an hour.

If I am riding a colt I like to saddle them before I leave home to let them "soak" a little... I donno why, but my step dad ran a ranch and rode a lot of colts when I was a kid, and he always said it was good for them... I've yet to see it hurt one, so I just never stopped doing it.

I'll admit.....I've done it.....when I have to haul over to the neighbors pasture because 100 head of cows are running loose, and I don't have time to unload and saddle my horse. I'd rather unload, step in the saddle and push them back in.

We also do it when we have to check multiple pastures throughout the day

I'm like most. I've done it in a big open stock trailer to work cattle. My husband will if he's hauling to a roping that's close. That's about it. Otherwise we saddle when we get there and always unsaddle before heading home.

I don't do it very often if I am going to a barrel race, but if it is close I'll saddle at home and haul.
When we go to do ranch work we almost always saddle at home and the horses wear them where ever we are going. Sometime they are in the trailer a couple hours. Never had it hurt one yet.
And sometimes we just throw them in and don't tie them *gasp*

My grandpa (who was a ranch foreman for years for a big ranch here) always gets on my butt about not saddling my horse before we leave when I go somewhere with him. He is always in a hurry and it seems like you can't ever do anything fast enough for him.... I show up 30 minutes early and he acts like I spent all day doing my hair.

He also thinks I baby my horses too much, we have had some interesting.... conversations lol.
Then you have my mom who is overly cautious. It is miserable going anywhere with both of them lol. He is doing some pretty risky things (usually to save time) and she is about to have a heart attack.

Oh ETA: I don't ever hauled saddled, regardless of who is complaining about it lol.

If we’re going to roping practice we boot and saddle our horses before we leave and just bridle there. Saves time & then you also know you have all your tack (we’ve forgotten things once or twice – or more LOL).

If I’m hauling to a barrel jackpot I’m usually hauling students & hosting the event so I have them tack & boot their horses before so I know they have all their tack and I tack my horses so they are ready to go warm up once the office is set up and running.

Granted these are for events 30 minutes or less away and during reasonable temperatures. If it’s really hot out I won’t tack before as the trailer gets pretty warm with the horses in there.
