My husband and I want to take a week long trip to Montana or Wyoming this year and stay at a nice dude ranch where we can do an overnight camping trip, cattle round ups and riding in the mountains... are thre any places you'd recommend to do these things and what did you like about them?

So far, the ones we have seen have been priced at about $5,000-$6,000 for a week.... is this pretty standard? Also, what is the best time to go????

Thanks!

320 Ranch in Big Sky, Montana is gorgeous! http://www.320ranch.com/

However, I spent two summers in Jackson Hole, Wyoming managing a horse trail riding operation.. and you cannot beat the Tetons! Heavenly!

Here are some nice ranches in that area.. usually they come in one week packages. The 320 ranch you can stay nightly. If you like to camp (cheaper option) Staying at Colter Bay in the Teton National Park is great! Here is the website for some cheaper lodging options and camping options: http://www.gtlc.com/

Highly recommend this one:

This place has the best little restaurant with the best bison burgers ever!

This place has the most breathtaking view of the Teton Mountain range, with loads of family history!

All locations are great access to Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Park.

Oh! And the best time to go is in July or August. This is the busy time of year, but you cannot beat the weather! Don't go in June.. it is the rainy season and it rains almost daily. In May, there is still snow on the ground. Keep in mine the morning temps there are still in the high 30's and will warm up to the high 70's and 80's by afternoon. With no humidity.

I am not certain on prices! Sorry!

Wow, I miss Wyoming just talking about it!

Montana is gorgeous in the summer. I've not been to many places to ride horses. One I have been to is Sun Canyon Lodge: http://www.suncanyonlodge.com/ . It is a bit more rustic (as some of their cabins have outhouses and such), but they have some modern conveniences as well. I've never stayed overnight so I don't know for sure what all they do, but the scenery is very pretty and it is up near Gibson Reservoir.  There is another place up there, but I'm not for certain what the name of it is, I think it may be the 7 Lazy P, but am unsure. You could check them out though: http://www.sevenlazyp.com/  Also, near Augusta, MT, there are some outfitters and ranches.

Then up near Glacier National Park is GORGEOUS (I'll attach a picture I took a couple of years ago from going over the Going to the Sun Road). St. Mary, MT, is right on the edge of GNP, and I have seen horse trips advertised for up there, but don't know any names of the ranches as I've never done that. But if you went there you won't be disappointed in the scenery.

The prettiest time of year to go is between the first of July and the middle of September. Much earlier you get rain (and possibly snow) and much later it gets pretty chilly and many ranches are booked with packing and hunting trips. We can get hot in August, but if you are more up in the mountains it is pretty. Places like the Going to the Sun Road aren't even open before July because it takes that long to get the snow cleared.

Because tourism is one of Montana's sources of income, chances are nothing will be very inexpensive. I don't know the prices, though.
I imagine there are many places down by Yellowstone National Park, but have never been on a horseback trip there so am unaware of what they might have. So, I'll quit rambling, but those are the few I know of. :)

Triple Creek ranch is very nice but I have no idea what they charge. They are in Darby , MT it is very pretty here and the weather is nice June, July, are best Aug and Sept the weather is good but if we have fires the smoke is terrible. Actually May is usually pretty nice but can get rain and be chilly.
