Well.... I've got myself a couple of REAL project horses this time but these folks need some help.

A couple at church who are NOT horse people inherited these two horses from the husband's mother because she's going to nursing home. They were basically just dumped into their lap. They know they need to get rid of them both but they don't want to just dump them. Problem is the 2 horses are not fit to even give away!

The mother was adament that all animals should be free and shouldn't be contained in ANY way -- that included halters, bridles, saddles. She never would let anyone work with these horses so they've never even had a halter on. They're 4 & 6 years old.

The best part???? .........They're still STALLIONS!

Tomorrow will be my first session with them so I'll know more once I get in there and see what I'm really dealing with. Of course I'm recommending that they geld ASAP --- but even if you could dart them to get them down, they'd still need to be gentle enough to doctored if something happened from gelding. Let alone the fact that I don't think there's anywhere to herd them into, and I don't know if we have a vet around here that I'd trust to dart a horse just because it's so uncommon in this area.

This may get a little interesting.... If nothing else, I'm sure it'll be a learning experience.

Wowzers!!!! I am sending some prayers your way. Don't go out there alone. Let us know when you get back. Perhaps they are big, fully intact, puppy dogs.

One of them does follow them around but one of them is skittish. They get fed every day so that will help, hopefully. Hubby is going to go with me to watch.... or laugh, lol!

I would try and get them halter broke and halfway gentled before you attempt to geld them. For the vet's safety and everyone around them who would try and doctor them afterward.

For conversations sake I am going to assume they probably didn't come with papers. LOL

I would say get the vet out to knock them out for you, then get their feet done, their vaccs done, and cut off the junk while they're out. At least you'll have a baseline to work with. You'll know they're healthy and mentally prepared to listen to you. Of course there's a chance that they could have complications, but most likely not, and they could still be doctored with further sedation if that became the case. At least you wouldn't be dealing with two mature, untouched stallions. Your safety is much more important than theirs, and they will be far more mentally ready to accept new things without the boys intact.

Wow, you're going to have fun.... :) Be safe!!!
I'm sure you're more experienced with me at this, but I'd move some of our round pen panels over there and start feeding them in a 4 box stall or even bigger round pen area....get them used to that and then start working them around. I don't know how much room they have though, and it's highly likely that with your experience you have much better ideas then myself!!! Good luck!!!

I would recommend a guy named Scott Daily....he does clinics with horses just like this....He lives just over the KS line from OK...918-636-2833. He's kinda like Tom Dorrance, Buck Brannaman, etc....I was very impressed.

You're doing this why?  There would have to be a hell of a lot of money in my pocket paid up front before I'd touch that kind of crap.

lol I'm with ya! I've had phone calls to work with similar type horses. I run the other direction as fast as I can. I refuse to risk getting hurt because someone else didn't take the time to work with their animals. But at the same time glad you're willing to give these boys a chance to improve their lives and maybe have a future.
