Location: Bastrop, Texas | I heard this on the radio this morning on my way back from the hospital.
It made me chuckle and brought back childhood memories:
THE BASIC RULES FOR CLOTHESLINES: (if you don't know
what clotheslines are, better skip this)
1. You had to wash the clothes line before hanging any clothes -
walk the entire lengths of each line with a damp cloth around the lines.
2. You had to hang the clothes in a certain order, and
always hang "whites" with "whites," and hang them first.
3. You never hung a shirt by the shoulders - always by
the tail!. What would the neighbors think?
4. Wash day on a Monday! . .. . Never hang clothes on the
Weekend, or Sunday, for Heaven's sake!
5. Hang the sheets and towels on the outside lines so you
could hide your "unmentionables" in the middle (perverts &
Busybodies, y'know!)
6. It didn't matter if it was sub zero weather . . ....
Clothes would "freeze-dry..
7. The clothes were frozen, stiff as a board so we hung them inside to dry.
They made the air smell so fresh inside, we didn't mind at all.
8. Always gather the clothes pins when taking down dry
clothes! Pins left on the lines were "tacky!"
9. If you were efficient, you would line the clothes up so that
each item did not need two clothes pins, but shared one of the
clothes pins with the next washed item..
11. Long sheets in the back and long pants too. so the wind could blow them smooth.
Short things in front so the wind could blow through. It was a science you know.
12.. Clothes off of the line before dinner time, neatly
folded in the clothes basket, and ready to be ironed.
13. IRONED?! Well, that's a whole other subject!
A POEM
A clothesline was a news forecast
To neighbors passing by,
There were no secrets you could keep
When clothes were hung to dry.
It also was a friendly link
For neighbors always knew
If company had stopped on by
To spend a night or two.
For then you'd see the "fancy sheets"
And towels upon the line;
You'd see the "company table cloths"
With intricate designs.
The line announced a baby's birth
From folks who lived inside -
As brand new infant clothes were hung,
So carefully with pride!
The ages of the children could
So readily be known
By watching how the sizes changed,
You'd know how much they'd grown!
It also told when illness struck,
As extra sheets were hung;
Then nightclothes, and a bathrobe, too,
Haphazardly were strung.
It also said, "Gone on vacation now"
When lines hung limp and bare.
It told, "We're back!" when full lines sagged
With not an inch to spare!
New folks in town were scorned upon
If wash was dingy and gray,
As neighbors carefully raised their brows,
And looked the other way . .
But clotheslines now are of the past,
For dryers make work much less.
Now what goes on inside a home
Is anybody's guess!
I really miss that way of life.
It was a friendly sign
When neighbors knew each other best
By what hung on the line. |

Location: NC | We use to untill this past year when we had to take it down due to yard improvements. But hopefully we will find another spot to put it back up this year. Though I will say we were not doing it properly, I had no idea there were so many rules!! haha  |

| Lol I use it in the summer, but flunked by those standards, I have hung clothes on Sunday, t shirts by the shoulders, all colors mixed together, I don't wash the clothes line. Guess I get a failing grade |

Location: MD | I loved using the clothes line and the way everything smelled and felt afterward... unfortunately we don't have one now and my boyfriend suffers from some really terrible allergies and so using a clothes line is way out of the question for him and I. :( |

Location: Oz, Kansas | I don't have a clothes line so in the summer I drape my sheets & comforters over the gates. I've had to run a few nosy cows away from them but nothing beats hanging outside to dry.

| I use mine when I can but sometimes, it is SO windy here, I can't hang stuff out. Nothing beats sheets hung on the line!!! |

Location: on my horse | We clothesline in the spring/summer/fall for sure! At my last house we didn't have an actual line so we strung our ropes between trees and the deck uprights and propped them up in the middle with pitchforks when we hung out heavy stuff like jeans and blankets |

Location: Southwest Minnesota | Well...I had no idea about all the rules, but I never was very rule oriented anyway. I still hang clothes out in the summer, it is my preferred method of drying. Love the fresh scent. I also hang out dog and horse items in the sun because it is a great natural deodorizer.

It heats the house up so dang much running the dryer in the summer. I'm not one to hang out in the winter. Jeans get hung up in the house, thrown over the shower stalls or where ever we can find room while its cold outside. The spring is kinda tough because the feedlots thawing my laundry smells......Country fresh. LOL |

Location: Oklahoma | I use mine all the time. And I follow all the rules with the exceptions of hanging them on Sunday and hanging clothes out in the winter. I hope I always have a clothesline. |

| I hate to admit that I follow at least half of these rules! The only reason I wipe it off though is because my husband also uses it to dry coyote hides! |

 You just got to get mean and mean it.
Location: Arkansas | That's how my mother and grandmother did it. Monday was always wash day and Tuesday was ironing day. They also ironed their sheet's! That's how I learned how to iron. Ironing the sheet's.
The reason you always washed the white's first was because they had a wringer washing machine and you only filled the tub once...in the beginning...while the water was hot. With two wash tub's filled with clean water, that you used to water the garden and flower's when you emptied them.
No, I wouldnl't go back to washing that way...just too much work. I love my automatic washer and dryer! LOL And do load of clothes nearly every day.

| I have gotten lazy and don't use mine as much as I should, but I DO still have one.
I would call those guidelines, rather than rules... Many of them are common sense for cleanliness and efficiency.....and I have been guilty of hiding unmentionables behind longer clothes. 
I do sometimes wonder if I am a little OCD. When I hang socks, similar kinds must all hang together and the feet must all point the same way. My sisters think that this is just common sense....when you take them down they will already be paired and ready to put away. Only I throw everything in the dryer for a few minutes to fluff and remove wrinkles. Yet I cannot walk away from the clotheslines if things aren't hung properly. 
Edited to add. Iron? Isn't that what some bits and horse shoes are made of??

| I don't exactly use a clothesline, but hang most of our clothes on the shower rod in the bathroom! Had a long clothesline back before we got a new house, but never did I know there were so many rules! lol |

I hang all our britches and other heavy clothing on the curtain rods in our bedroom, on the shower in the bathroom and on the curtain rods in the living room if need be. I do this year round. Trying to keep them from shinking, fading and wearing out too fast. Also this time of year it helps to add a little humidity to the dry heat of the furnace. |

Location: nearby | I definitely use my clothesline. I use it all year. Since I work I usually wash on the weekends. If the weather is too bad, I just wait until the next weekend. Yep, you guessed it; don't have any children to wash clothes for. I love getting into bed after the sheets have been washed and then dried on the line especially flannel sheets. |

Location: your guess is as good as mine | I never have, but my grandmother did and the lady I rent my pasture from did for the longest time. They used an automatic washer but still used a clothesline to dry... |
