Location: Smack Dab in the Middle | I'm headed to the vet in a couple of hours with my poor pooch...but I want to go armed with ideas if possible. She has an ear infection, which is the primary reason for the visit. But, in the last week, with the escalation of the icky ear, she is chewing on her front legs, BAD. She's always been a tick on the neurotic side, and I suspicion it's misdirected itching of her ears, because there is nothing wrong with her feet/legs, and she doesn't scratch at her ears. She kinda did this before, about 5 1/2 years ago when she was recovering from a bad accident. She'd chew on places that didn't hurt, because she didn't want to chew on the places that did...
Here she is being a good dog, laying in my office today...
Any ideas? Also, can dogs have any meds like Diflucan? The ear wash route just isn't cutting this infection this time around. |

Yes, when they have something going on in the ear they will generally start chewing on the legs and feet. My guess is yeast. A good antibiotic should help. |

With Yeast??? An antibiotic will help clear up the skin infection she's given herself, but not the yeast I don't think. That's why I'm wondering about the diflucan or another anti-fungal medication. |

| Nystatin is for dealing with yeast. I have to use it on our English Bulldog.

| My dog has horrible allergy and skin problems! But my dog was doing the same even worse and it was a skin infection, maybe that's it? They gave him an antibiotic and antihistamine to fix it AND they said he needs to be on a monthly flea and tick regimen which I just never really thought of because he doesn't have fleas and isn't around any other animals who do but it seemed to help! Poor baby, I hope it feels better! |

| She might have food allergies. Typically they will scratch at their ears but no yeast will be present and chew at there paws/feet. She might need a diet change depending what she is currently on. |

Location: Smack Dab in the Middle | She definitely currently has an ear infection...probably a yeast infection. I used to work for a vet as a tech, so I am familiar with "that smell", and her ears are becoming squooshy. Allergies could still be a culprit though I'm sure. |

| I had a dog that had food allergies and chewed on his legs like that. Per vet that was a symptom. He put him on a prescription food that cleared it up- no more chewing on himself. He was on this food for about 6 months, ran out over the weekend so fed him the grain free I had for my other dogs and it did not bother him. I did not have to go back to the pescription food. I guess the 6 months he was on it allowed his system to "get right" or get rid of whatever the allergen was that was bothering him. Sure hope she finds some relief. Over load of yeast can cause all kinds of problems in humans, may be the same for dogs.

Yup...there are a few perks to my job :) I only see my boss a few times a year (he always says if I don't see him it means I'm not doing anything wrong...) and I work for a large coop, running the feed and animal heath department. She's also VERY well behaved. After her accident, she was on some pretty powerful pain meds every couple of hours, and couldn't get up on her own, so she came to work with me everyday for over a month. I put her blanket where I want her, and that's where she stays. I had a male aussie that was my whole heart and soul, but this girl is a really close second.
Here was right after her accident, and you can see all the road rash and the cast. She lost several teeth as a result too, and has a bad scar on one back leg.
And here she is, all healthy a few months ago, completely avoiding eye contact with my photographer. She would not look at him for ANY reason, LOL! So he did what he could.

| I have dog that started itching. I started on grain free diet. Starch feeds yeast. Feed her greek yogart and buttermilk and she is much much better. |

Location: A roping pen near you!! | Ask your vet about a new drug called Apoquel made by Zoetis we just started using it in our clinic. The best part is it starts working fast and is very safe. Better and safer than a steroid. |
