Going off of the push style preference thread, it made me start thinking....do you worry about rate with a push style?  Or do you just kind of trust that they will do it themselves?  They're naturally rating right?  I've had a free runner and it's not fun.  Now we've got a horse that won't run by a barrel but I was also helping him....makes me nervous to just go in and not check!  Am I crazy?

I do not rate a push style horse in the normal sense. On occasion, I might have a ratey horse that I will go in and you will see me bump them back "suare" at the pocket, but not bump to set them down. I like one that I can just send all the way from the back of the alley and not stop sending till I'm back across the timers.

I don't think a single bump would hurt a ratey horse, depending on how ratey they naturally are. Maybe try not bumping him at home and see if you can trust him to turn on his own.

I've had ratey horses that still needed a light bump with the inside rein to remind them to give their nose, get their head up, or bring them back on the backside.

I've never had to check my ratey horses.  I basically stop kicking when I get to the barrel.  I do have to say I have my first free runner that I got a year ago.  I absolutely love her style and I'm not breathing quite so hard when we finish a run like I was with my push style horses. LOL

I will give a lil bump on my first but on 2 & 3 I just stop kickin and sit down. He is super ratey though. I guess it just really depends on the horse.

I rate my mare, she is a push type, if I don't rate her....she rates herself which throws me off during the run. I quit kicking once I hit my rate point, give her a check which is lifting my inside hand and kiss her through the turn. I like push type horses.

I've got 2 push style horses im running right now. one I do not stop pushing, when i get to my pocket i give him a lil extra push to get him by the barrel, then he snaps back and we are onto the next barrel, he rarely hits barrels but just gotta push. he is missing his right eye so thats the barrel i need to push him past the most

my other guy needs a lil bump to get his nose then on the backside of the barrel i push him to keep his front end moving

I've never owned a freestyle running horse. Would be fun to try out

Rating my push style stallion = stop kicking.

I consider Xena free running style, but she works the same way - as in if I stop pushing (ie, set down, drop hand) she gets ready to turn.   I just don't have to use my feet with her as much as the stallion.

The first horse described is exactly like my gelding. All you have to do to rate him is stop kicking and he sits and inhales his barrels. As long as you get him up into his pocket, he wil never hit a barrel. If you look down at the barrel or stop kicking to soon, he will 100% turn over top of it - but that's rider error. He is honest as the day is long, but I think I'm more winded than he is after a run. lol

My gelding I can usually just drive into the pocket sit and inside leg around the barrels.  He can get super ratey sometimes but not a barrel hitter at all and not a lug that you have to kick the crap out of, if he cheats me and I don't get him to where he needs he will do the ugly V shaped turn or step off coming out of the turn.

I think it depends on the horse. After running a ratey mare for years my version of rating one was to quit kicking. Then I ran a Beuduino bred mare for a friend, she was constantly yelling "rate, rate, RATE!!!! For the Love of GOD RATE!!!" I kind of finally got it, with that mare you had to slowly pick up and ask ever so sweetly for "hey, can you check back here with me, we are going to turn and probably shouldn't do so with an 18 foot stride carrying you 32 MPH..." If you grabbed her her head flipped upside down and you were on a trial ride.
I now have two free runners, but the gelding will rate nicely where ever you ask for it, the mare you kind of have to ask her the same way I did the Beuduino mare and tag on "if you rate and turn here, you will get to run like a striped azzed ape to the next barrel, won't that be great???" The other mare is a barrel hunter, she gets out of the trailer and rates anything that is round and taller than her knee ,with you merely going from Ed Wright very forward hip tilt encouraged position to ever so slightly rolling your hips under and she's rating back to you. If you don't do it she tends to rate herself but on her front end. On a horse like her you do not want to run out an open gate with a garbage can holding it open....just an FYI.

I have 3 push style horses and only have to rate two of them going to the first barrel, then its ride like a maniac to get by the barrels. They tend to be pretty sensitive to when I drop my outside rein. That means RATE to them, and my bay horse will also rate off my seat.

IMO it takes a while to get brave enough to send one and just trust that they're going to turn. If you have watched any of my Clifford videos, you've seen me struggle to trust that he will turn. Finally in three runs this year, I've started to figure it out - drop my outside rein early going to the first barrel then think about anything but the second & third barrels so I will ride all the way in there and trust that (a) he will turn and (b) I will not fall off when he does!

 Me too.

All the push style horses I've ridden haven't had the speed, so maybe this horse hubby bought for himself (that I'm stealing) will surprise us.  He's so broke and actually listens to your cues.  (Shocker!).  I need to figure out the best bit for him....Now I just needed to get the heck out of San Diego and get back home so I can start riding again!!!

My push style mare, I can hustle her to first, but I need to bump it if I really push her, but the other two I have to push push push and then lift her shoulder off so she doesn't hit them, very little if any rating at all. It also depends on her mood though, and I can feel going into the alley if I'm going to need to rate that first barrel or not. It's trial and error. I know the first time I pushed Dee to first, we totally blew past it, and that's when I learned that she does need a slight touch for the high speed going into it, while she turned the other two like a dream (and placed in 2D if I remember correctly. haha)

Exactly what WrapSnap said. I dont typically rate them down but will occasionally bump them down to square them up. I still have first barrel phobia because of a free runner so once in a while ill play with my rein out of habit, my guy has learned to kinda ignore it.

My mare is setty and push style, never runs by a barrel, she's super honest. Fires hardest if I use the over n under once on the way into each barrel.
