| OK, so I didn't want to put this on facebook, as I didn't want my husband to see it. He is worried enough about me as it is.
As stated, today really sucked. Was so happy this morning. If cable, watch the Dead. So went out to feed and my barrel horse, MY BABY is laying in the snow. No biggie, the others and him have been doing the same. Walked out to check water and he didn't get it. Humm, Went over and he has crap coming out of his nose. Well, he had choked about 3 years ago but he hasn't had any MAJOR issues since. Watered his grain, let him drink before we ran. But this morning was not good. So we hooked the trailer up, got it unstuck from the snow ad off to the vets we go.
He worked as hard as he could but could not get the choke cleared. Once again in the truck and off we got to K-State. The tubed him again. Couldn't get it cleared. Then ran a scope revealing a monster of a tear in his esophagus. Surgery was out of the question. The said he had a VERY low chance of coming out of this if any chance at all.
It was horrific petting his sleek back and kissing his beautiful sideways blaze and knowing that even though he was running and playing yesterday, and he standing on his own right at that moment, that very soon he would not be alive.
Hardest thing I ever did to take his halter, run my hand down his side and then leave. |

| Yes, he is gone. No hope. They said, even if money was no issue, they would NOT suggest trying to fix it. It was horrible seeing this tear that was about as long as my hand. |

Location: Texas | I am so sorry. I know it is very hard, but you did the right thing for him. With a ruptured esophagus, food particles basically could get everywhere- in and around his thoracic cavity, and the peritoneum pouches through the diaphragm as well. You saved him from battling some really really bad infections.
Again, I am so so sorry that you lost your horse. It's always the ones closest to our hearts that leave too soon :( |
