| My daughters new horse is a real cutie... but dang the dirt really shows! I'm looking for secrets to cleaning up a grey horse... especially his tail, which is pretty yellow (yuck!). What are the best products? Any homemade remedies? |

Location: Qld Australia | Blue - o or what ever your equivilent is in the States. You get it in the clothes washing aisle of the supermarket.
My old show mare was a grey and we have shown brilliant white based paints for clients and it is the best thing I have found for that yellow tail look and manure stains. You have to be careful not to leave it on too long though or you will be riding a purple horse lol. For the tail I would dilute the Blu-o and put the tail straight into the bucket and swirl it around for about half a minute, leave for another half a minute or so and rinse; repeat as required. Make sure you wash their side too though if they swish their tail with Blue-o in it.
Have fun cleaning!!!!! |

Location: NC | A rodeo I use to work at when I was younger had two white/gray flag horses and they use to wash them in Whisk laundry detergent, it is a blue liquid. Worked great for them. They washed those horses twice a weekend almost every weekend and it didn't seem to bother them at all. |

Location: Canada | Purple shampoo for horses removes the yellow. You can use the human version made for blondes but I don't find they work as well. Some are better then others but really any purple equine shampoo works. |

^^^^ This......my youngest boy showed a gray pony. A few (and I mean a FEW) drops in the wash water and it will whiten and brighten the tails, manes and body....Not too much or you will have a blue tinged horse....don't ask me "how" I know that.....lol |

Location: OK | Once or twice a season use clorox on the mane and tail. Trust me It will not hurt anything but the clothes you are wearing. Also if you add some tide powder detergent it will make the hair slick and easily detangled while the mixture is in the hair. I always use conditioner after washing. Other than that the blue shampoo is what I use. |

| Thanks to everyone, this has been fun to read! The barn where he currently lives has warm wash water so I know my daughter will be excited to try some of these ideas. |

Location: Kansas (but Great Lakes member since 1978) | White vinegar works great and isn't harmful to your horse at all.... not apple cider but white. I usually wash with regular Dawn every once in a while but in between just some of the vinegar.

You just got to get mean and mean it.
Location: Arkansas | I would think when using any kind of dish or laundry detergent, you would need to rinse the horse off REALLY well to get rid of any detergent residue. Those are drying to the skin. |

Yes.. but if you rinse them with 50/50 vinegar and water, it will cut the soap and rinse them pretty clean. |

Location: Texas | In a pinch I use any bluing shampoo from Sally's. But my real secret is Kirks Castile bar soap ( kinda hard to find I found mine at the local Cracker Barrel). I use it once a week on my palomino and gray horse. You want to talk about White tails. I wash with the bar soap and the condition let it completely dry and put it in a bag. It works best after about four weeks of doing it. I was planning on dying my palominos tail and mane for a clinic last year and an Arab show trainer showed me this truck instead. It works awesome!! |
