You know when they say "it can't get much worse", and that's about the point it starts rolling downhill? After losing my grandfather to brain cancer, a cousin to suicide, and my younger brother's homicide in the span of 3 months, my horses and my faith are about the only things that kept me going. I was especially excited about sending a 3 year old filly I'd bred (and managed to hide from hubby and not sell) to a reputable trainer to start for me. This is the first colt I've kept back for myself (we usually sell all of our colts as weanlings) in a long time, so I had been saving for her training and wanted her to have the best opportunity possible.

I get a call on Friday, not from the trainer but from his WIFE to tell me that my filly had an accident Thursday evening. I managed to get the trainer on the phone and his story is he had tied my filly to a panel (not a great idea) for a minute to run to the barn to grab something. Filly spooked, pulled back (panel came with her), she jumped forward and got her front leg hung in the panel.. basically, in short, a huge wreck. I immediately left work, got the trailer hooked up and went to get her... When I saw her, I started bawling. She's scratched up all over and her knee is the size of a softball, with swelling all the way down to her ankle. Got an appointment with my vet on Saturday, he x-rayed her, and to summarize, said the filly has a slim chance of being a riding horse again, let alone a barrel horse. I'm distraught.

Hubby says that we need to sell her as a broodmare after we get her healed up, or breed her. So, since I hadn't really planned on breeding her, I need a little help picking out a baby daddy for her. She is a short girl (about 14.2 on a good day with shoes on), but as wide as she is tall. Cute head, nice neck that ties in well, low hocks. I would like to breed her to a stud that tends to throw some size. We have a bit of a budget (<$2500), but since I've already saved for her training that isn't going to happen, we have a little leeway. Here is her full sister's allbreed:

I've heard some great things about his babies, I just didn't know how big they were. I don't have anything against short horses, but if there was one thing I'd improve on my filly is to make her just a bit taller. I know somebody else may be able to pick her apart, but I can't fault her myself.

Man that's so sad about your filly...especially since it was a preventable accident.  I'm a firm believer in the fact that a horse can injure itself in a padded stall while wrapped in bubble wrap...but a trainer should KNOW you do NOT tie a horse to a portable anything...not even for a minute.  ugh.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bbvzjJuFez0&feature=share  This is a 2 yr old just started. They are all very nice minded and very fluid moving and reachy. They are all big. The colt Lyndee has for the futurities this year is 16.1 and is out of a Peppy San Badger/Firewater Flit bred mare. I saw that mare and she is 14.3.  All of them are 15.2 or better.

No kidding! It is amazing how stupid people can be.Even if they think Oh it's just for a minute. I saw a heck of a wreck similar to your's from a very well known, big name in Az. last month who decided to tie one of their futurity horse up to a stall gate. Seriously?? Horse took off with the stall gate.  Got tangled in said stall door. It was ugly.

Yes, I was really disppointed, since he's done a wonderful job starting colts for us before. And this filly is not high strung or jumpy at all, so it really surprised me. But, anything can happen. With the luck I've been having especially.
I will look at Otra Frasco for sure. Any other ideas? I plan on running a few by hubby to see what he thinks as well.

I made this mistake with my barrel horse. She was 7 at the time, and was very laid back, not much bothered her. Until the gelding in the pasture I had her tied to bit her on the nose. Can we say fireworks? I ended up with a concussion because when she pulled back, I tried to undo her rope and the board came off and nailed me in the head, knocked me out for a minute and the horse ended up running back to the barn and getting stuck on the door. She was fine, but I felt so stupid afterwards, because I know better. (But it was only for a minute and I was standing right next to her brushing her tail.)

Sorry about your filly OP.
