I ended up buying a son of Dashin Bye last week. He last raced in August of 2013. He has been in the pasture since and then I brought him home last week. Had him vet checked new shoes, the works. Let him get settled in. Rode him Sat, Sun, Mon. I was expecting high energy, maybe a little cantankerous, ill-mannered etc...I don't know why. Maybe a bad assumption on my part. While he def. does not know a whole lot, he was relaxed, easy going, no spook, very laid back. More like an old trail horse.

Is this a product of Dashin Bye or perhaps his dam, IB Business? I am hoping the energy level picks up soon but I like this nice fellow in the meantime.

Probably a product of really good training.  There are still a few trainers out there that know these horses won't race their entire lives, so they put more effort into breaking them so they can have success in other careers.

I was expecting the same out of my OTT Toast To Dash daughter but she is the same way I love her ! I would take another OTT in a heart beat. I have heard Dashin Byes can be hot. I don't have any experience with them though but I sure like the looks of them. PM LRQH on here she knows a lot about Dashin Bye horses.

I actually called his trainer before I bought him knowing they would know a lot more about him than the guy who pastured him. She could have sold me one of her horses but she told me he was awesome and if I didn't buy him she would buy him back. We are keeping in touch. She does have a passion for their life after racing.

My off the track gelding is the same way. Super laid back and almost lazy 95% of the time but when it comes time to run he's all business. Then walks out of the arena and promptly falls back asleep. Lol I'm gonna give it to how much they were exposed to while on the track. I have come across very few things that he will even bat an eye at.

We want to see pictures! The Dashin Byes that I raised were very laid back, but all of the foals that this mare has raised for us have been that way.

Several years ago I bought a broodmare that was raced. When we had trouble getting her in foal we decided to ride her. She was very level-headed and a really fun ride. She didn't get scared by speed, she would walk calmly in the gate, run when I asked her, then walk calmly out. This was my only experience riding a horse off the track, but if they were all like her I'd be glad to have more.

Both of my OTT that were bought for broodies/riding horses have been this way. My Streakin La Jolla mare was super easy to restart and run barrels on until a track injury forced her early retirement. She was running barrels less than a year off the track. I bought a Judge Cash daughter (based off her son I'm riding & 4N's daughter) that was was raced as a 2 & 3 year old, and as best I can track her history just been a brood mare since. We brought her home and was wondering what she would do if we got on. To my best guess it was 11 years between the track and when we got on. You would never know, she is super soft, kind and sweet. I pony my little boy on her while I ride others. I've had good luck with my OTT, but I do believe a lot of that is the foundation that both mares were given.

I have a daughter by Dashin Bye.....it must be his dam! My mare has tons of energy! she can and will go for hours and hours and NEVER gets tired. She has a ridiculous amount of speed too. She goes from 0 to 70 in a second flat I swear. She doesn't have a whole lot of spook either, but laid back and trail horse aren't really words i would choose for my girl haha. I love it all, shell make a nice little horse once we get her kinks worked out! Id be pretty excited if I were you!!

In my younger days, me and a friend took a string of colts 2 summers in a row to put 30 days on. I thought they all broke out real nice. If you are breaking young horses, people will bring you a little bit of everything. Including a lot of junk. Straight thru these things had a head full of sense. They actually reminded me more of cow bred horse rather than the image I had of a race horse.

Thanks all. I will try to get a pic posted. He is definitely a horse I enjoy working with. I appreciate the feedback. My Bly other experience with an OTT horse was my Streakin LaJolla mare but she had been off for several years. I am pleasantly surprised at the OTT horse attitude. :)

My Rare Form stud was like that. We got him in the fall and gave him all winter off out with the geldings. Got him in in the spring to ride through the cows and he rode off like a lazy dead broke kids horse. Kind of nice isn't it :

I just bought a son of chilled corona who was ran on the track last year, he did great and won over 40,000 i am lucky if I can keep him loping a circle. He is lazy and broke. Its nice because they get the spook out of them, but I thought he would be a bit more "rammy" and have some issues, but there is nothing! Love him to death.

I have two that were run on the track.  One i've owned six he was 6 months old and we ran him last year a little bit.  Both of these colts you almost have to peddle at a walk.  I had two others that we ran a couple of years ago and they were the same way, though one was a handful on the ground, once you got on her she was really quiet.  I've only had one OTT that was just too hot to ride, and knowing where she came from, I guarantee you it was how she was handled.  All of my others have been somewhat lazy.  I actually prefer a horse that's pretty forward so sometimes it irritates me.  LOL

That is how I want mine to be off the track. I like mine to be mellow! It's so much easier to train one that's calm than one that's hot

I bought a first first down dash bred mare off the track last year and I was also surprised with just how quiet she was, no spook and not a whole lot of go until one day when I was slow working the pattern she just sat back and zoomed off out of third... she definitely has some speed!

This is why I prefer racebred horses. People look at me like I'm crazy when I tell them my cowbreds were always hotter than my racebreds. When you think about it, they have to be pretty calm to be loaded in those gates over and over again and run their guts out between w/o daily riding, plus their jockeys ride on postage stamped sized saddles. If they were crazy, you couldn't do that with them.
