I am being deployed in April and have a 7 y/o appendix mare. I am debating on selling her and buying a horse that is trained when I get back or sending her to trainer and taking a chance with her. Trainer is 500 per month. I am not wanting to be extremely serious. I would just want to be competitive at small jackpots or local rodeos. Just giving a few pics and video.

I'd say it depends on how quickly you want to be competing in those local jackpots when you get back (Thanks for serving our country!!).

If you send your mare to the trainer you will still need to season her once you get back... and all horses are different, but you might want to take it slow and haul for exbh for awhile.

If it were me I would sell the mare, but keep saving $500/month as if she was at the trainer and I think you'll have money for a good horse in no time!

The pics wouldnt load for me it said content unavailable. I only started to watch the first video but it was really grainy so hard to see much. However, it looks like in that video you have her started really well.  With that said, I agree with the above. Sell her, save the money and keep saving the $500 a month. I am assuming you will be gone for over a year? If so, I would be really leary of sending a horse for that amount of time when you have absolutelly NO chance of checking in on your horse.

I would sell.. and save the money you would be spending on boarding and training. When you get back you'll be able to buy something very nice. Ive been there done that.. got the t shirt...when I was over seas I boarded a prospect and did some training... I wouldn't reccomend it.. and you wont have tonworry about your horse while your gone.

First thing, Thank you for what your doing for us and thats serving for our country     And I agree with the others I would sell her and put my money away, cause you never know when or if they will get hurt, colic. And who will be taking care of your horse the whole time that you are gone? Looks like you did a nice job of starting her.     God Bless You

Thanks for the advice. I agree that it is best to sell her. I know it will be extremely difficult cause I have owned her for 2 yrs and taught her everything she knows. But, I agree that selling her is probably going to be best. I will be gone for 6 mths and do not trust others that much to keep her trained and safe.

If your only going to be gone for 6 months then that is doable and you would only gain $3000. Thats not going to gain you a whole lot in the grand scheme of things. The person you were going to send her to....are they a top notch trainer or are they a trainer wannabe?

If you decide to send her to a trainer, make sure they can and will send you weekly videos of her and her progress. Also have a backup if thing go south and you need to pull her out of the trainers.

I was thinking that you were going to be gone longer. Your mare seems like a nice horse and you did such a nice job on getting her started on barrels, can you send her to a trainer for a few months and then maybe get a good friend to take care of her for you untill you get back? Where are you keeping her now?

If you sell her maybe you can make them agree to the first right of refusal? Or do you have someone you trust who could just keep her in shape or board her for you? Just depends how attached you are to the horse.

This.  I didn't realize you would only be gone for six months.  As long as you have someone you can trust with her I'd keep her and see where you're at when you're back from deployment.
