Location: Wonderful Wyoming | tonight for the 3rd time (very random in over 6 months) my truck just kind of slips out of gear. The first and 3rd time were when it had been parked a while and I shifted to drive (it's an automatic) and putted slowly to where my trailer is parked. You give it a little gas to go and it just doesn't move. Put in reverse nada, put in 1st, nothing. Back to park and then to drive and after a couple times it is all normal again. The 2nd time was after we drove it an hour and stopped to get a snack, pulled out of the parking lot and it did it for just a short time. Fluid is normal.
It's a 2000 4x4 with about 127k miles. Is the tranny going out? I sure hope not :( |

Location: Texas | Linkage could be going out even though it aounds like a fuel issue.Or tranny could be slipping. Id have it looked at though. Nber hurts to service the tranny. |

Location: Viola, IL | Honestly? It could be a few different things, but I'm going to say transmission. Dodge transmission are notorious for being "bad". A good friend of mine runs a diesel mechanic shop, and builds pulling trucks. Our "group" builds our own personal diesels, and I've heard just about every transmission issue from dodge trucks that you can imagine. IF you choose to rebuild, take it to a performance mechanic and have them put in something aftermarket. If you just replace it with another stock transmission, you'll have the same problem.
We had a cummins, once. I kept it for 6 months, it didn't even have 100,000 miles on it, and I had put three transmissions in it. Another friend has a 2006, and he put 7 stock transmissions in his, and finally put a goerhand in it. (He doesn't even pull his!!) Just to share a few stories. |

| I have a 2006 with only 50,000 on it and it does the SAME thing. - VERY random also. I had a 2003 before that and it got a new tranny at only 4000 miles. |

Location: Wonderful Wyoming | it's funny because I did a google search and you are all right. Sounds like something very common. We bought it back in '06 or '07 with about 75k and haven't put a dime of repairs into it. It's been a great truck. It of course did it the first time with me so it was hard to explain to my husband, but these last 2 times were with him. |

Location: Do I hear Banjos? | Yeah...it's time to have the transmission checked out before something fails bad enough to trash the whole thing and strand you. May be to that point any way. The manual transmissions in the Dodge are a better animal all around. But for the automatic I agree with the rest on here that going with a performance transmission for a replacement is the way to go. Don't just go back in with a stock. We just did mine (05 Dodge 2500 4WD) and went with a much "beefier" torque converter and rebuild kit. Thankfully my boyfriend is a diesel mechanic so I only had to pay for parts.
My truck has the obligatory Programmer, leveling kit, and 35's. (Just like the Luke Bryan song my "Big Black Jacked up Truck...Rollin on 35's"...) I love it and will drive it till the wheels fall off! |

| It could be as simple a sensor has gone out. Replaced my sensor for about $325 in about 30 minutes, and it runs great now. Thought it was the transmission. I had no power, but it was random. When you turn off the truck and restart it the sensors reset. I would start with replacing the sensor first. Find you a truth worthy mechanic, who works with transmissions.

Have had it put on the computer and all checked out fine. Just a quirk it has. At the dealership they charge 125 to put it on the computer. It may be worth some peace of mind to have them run a test. |

YES! mine does this as well. We use an old beat up extended cab 1500 to run around and putt putt my little trailer around the ranch so the Dodge is only for trips to town. It may sit parked in the garage for months on end. When I put it in reverse to back out, it sometimes just sits there. It is better when warmed up good, but being a diesel, my father in law has a coronary if I leave it running in the garage so always back it out and shut the doors so the stink can blow away.
I haven't tried shutting it off and seeing if the "slipping tranny" stops. We have a few good diesel mechanics around that work on my husband's semi, might make him take it in and see what they think. I hate to be loaded with horses and kids somewhere stuck on the interstate. |

I second the torque converter while you're at it. Also, I don't recommend replacin with a Jasper. My first Jasper made it 900 miles, and the first time I hooked up to my trailer, it went FIVE miles and it would no longer shift.
I think you should take it somewhere, instead of buying parts and throwing them at it. A good diesel mechanic is going to be able to diagnose your problem for you. Also, shop around. Our good diesel place, gives you a discount on your shop rate if you purchase parts through them. Instead of $80/hr it drops to $60. |

Location: Never in one place long | My 2004 Dodge 3500 has been doing weird things since we got is 4 years ago.... sometimes when you're driving it it will SHIFT really hard into gears... we've found if you stop, put it in park and then take off again it resets something so it doesn't do it??????? I've taken it to mechanics but of course since it does it intermitently it NEVER does it when I bring it in so they dont' know what it is..... We' just drive it like that as it only happens every now and then but it sure is ANNOYING! We also had our injectors go out TWICE and that was not cheap, I've heard of many others having the injectors go out on Dodge trucks.... |
