So goes the term "get met, it pays".. yeah.. not so much.. My Dad passed away and he has/had a life insurance policy thru Met life.. It seems like its one thing after another.. first they weren't sure he had a policy, then they were trying to locate the beneficiaries, then they were trying to verify the beneficiaries, then they were checking off site files??? (in todays age of technology? I find this odd..really??.. they have to go dig thru old file boxes? Its not in a database??) now they need copies of both of his divorces to make sure neither exwife is entitled to the money, which Michigan State law voids upon a divorce. Not one of my siblings, or any other family members has been contacted from MetLife thru all of this. We call every week, and every week they give us another hoop to jump through. As if loosing my (our) Dad isn't hard enough to deal with, but the bills from the funeral are piling, and people want their money.

My question is... is this normal? Or is something not quite right? I have never had to go thru this before. When my grandma died.. it took less than 30 days to get things settled..funeral got paid, expenses got paid, and what was left my mom and her 3 brothers split 4 ways.

I know this is an odd thing to post in a public forum, about barrel racing no less... but Im sure some of you have gone thru something similar. This is always a good place to learn life experiences. Any input you may have will be helpful..if only to ease my mind..please!

I'm sorry for your loss. When my dad passed, we discovered that he did not transfer his policy to my mother, so we had to get his ex wife to sign it over (which she did with no issues).Β However the company was quick to respond and had good communication with us. Something smells fishy about this to me. I just looked MetLife up on the BBB. They are not BBB accredited and there are 476 complaints against them. I'm sorry you're dealing with this. Good luck.

I am very sorry about your dad.  I have had to process claims here at work for individuals with different companies.  All I ever had to do was provide a certified copy of the death certificate.  Is there anyone local whom you can contact, like an agent?  Is there a supervisor, instead of just a call center?  Also, if you don't have any luck getting this processed your State Insurance Commissioner should have a help line.

Again, I am sorry you are having to go through this.

I don't know.. it was thru General Motors. They put us thru to MetLife who the policy was with.. I guess if we don't get anywhere after sending them the 2 divorce decree's then I will go seek help from the State Insurance Commission.. Thanks for reminding me of that..

This just doesn't seem normal... idk..

This is not normal for a non contested policy, meaning the policy is more than 2 years old. The company will have to pay interest after 30 days so they are usually quick to avoid interest.

Contact the state DOI, {Dept of Insurance}. I just had to help one of my clients file a complaint with the DOI for foot draggging. It should never come to that but sometimes it just does. The claim was settled within 2 weeks of the DOI compaint. The company is furious with me for helping my client so I won't mention the company.

Contact the DOI tomorrow. Nothing gets to a company like a consumer DOI complaint.

"Usually" just the mentioning of your intent to call the Department of Insurance (in your state) will hasten their responses. Talk to a Supervisor!

If nothing else contacting the DOI will light a fire. it seems that's all you need right now.

All I can say is good luck! I had a horrible time with them last year when my mom passed away. Had to hire a lawyer.
