I recently bought a 14 year old seasoned barrel horse. The folks that I bought him from gave me his bridle and said all he has EVER been ran in is a draw gag bit. I have ran him in it and he runs a pretty clean pattern for the most part, but I have no brakes, and sometimes he gets hot and wants to lunge and pull against the bit(especially if I try to just lope or do slow work through the pattern). I don't over do it on the pattern but I do need to get the feel for him. I feel like I may need alittle more bit??? Or switch bits to work at home??? But what bit?? Away from the pattern he is just a laid back easy goin sweetheart.. Any suggestions?

What is the bit that you usually use on your barrel horses?  We all have several bits that work well with our hands.  I try those bits first.
