What makes a winner?

I so admire Charmayne's mental toughness in regards to competition...loved her poker face..and calmness....
I know I spend a lot of time thinking about the style of barrel turn, practicing techniques, etc, but the mental aspect of barrelracing is so critical as well.
As we all know, there are many different styles of training and riding, but one thing I have noticed with winners...the riders who do well consistently, is that they believe and are committed to their methods, and abilities, and do not 2nd guess themselves.

i think a lot of it has to do with your mental game. I know personally, i have mentally screwed myself before i ever go in the alley. If i can keep my nerves under control, we can usually have good runs, if not, its a disaster and i ride like a monkey

George Morris told me years ago that in order to be a legend, one must wholly believe in their program. On top of that, the mental aspect of it is imperative! This is something that I find myself battling in recent years. I used to have so much confidence in the arena and in my ability to win. Now, I know I can make a horse that is capable of winning. I know that I can help a rider win. I can set an arena record in the exhibitions, but when it counts, subconsciously, something takes ahold of me and I just don't make the runs that I know I am capable of. The mentality of a true winner is one that will allow them to make a run that the rest of the world might think they are "incapable" of!
