Location: 100 miles from Nowhere, AR | I've noticed several times this winter that our tap water will get a (NASTY) soapy taste several days at a time. I'm having to drink filtered fridge water at times and since I hate cold water and prefer chugging large amounts at once over sipping, I'm not drinking enough. I read that sometimes they will put chemicals in the water to prevent freezing...this crap couldn't be good for us or the animals--thankfully, the horses have a pond. Anyone else have this problem? I grew up on well water and have only had rural water for a little over 3 years. |

Location: Blissfully happy Giants fan!!! | Three you and I are a lot alike. I HATE cold water. No matter what temperature it is outside, I want my water to be closest to room temperature as possible. When I get a tea at Starbucks I literally tell them no more than 10 cubes of ice. lol!
I haven't had it happen here yet but my mom swore that happened in California when the house finally went off the well and on to city water. I would call the water company and have them run a test. |

Ha! Tried that. Can't get ahold of anyone. This is the biggest bunch of yahoos you've ever seen running this thing. I offered to take the secretary/manager position when the current one moved 2 hours away, but she won't turn it loose and no one will make her. This is the same bunch that left us without water for 3 days last fall. |

| I may be wrong, but many places are adding flouride to drinking water and I think it has that soapy taste. |

| I know ours had a different taste and a bit of a smell when they switched rivers last fall. And then this spring when we got a melt and some runoff they put out an announcement that it might taste different but it was safe to drink while they dialed in the chemical levels at the treatment plants.
Can you put the fridge water in a pitcher and leave it out? That's what I usually do. We have a couple big glasses I will fill and leave sit out, then drink it all down at room temp and refill it. Cold water hurts to chug!!! |

| If only people knew the process raw water goes through before we drink it.....
To purify water they do actually clean them with multiple chemicals. One being ozone...UV...Chlorine Dioxide...Hypocholorite...Chlorine gas...
There is a long process...truthfully we are lucky to have the filtration water set up we have compared to other countries...granted who wants to drink soapy water?
Sorry this is the science teacher coming out in me and we just got done doing a unit where we were "enviornmental" engineers and we made filters to save "Buddy the Fish."
Here is a nice little video that will explain the water filtration process if you feel like educating yourself although you may already know this (sorry if you do):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tuYB8nMFxQA
Also-turbidity is something else that water treatment plants or environmental engineers will measure to deem water safe for swimming, drinking etc. If you are truly concerned I would check into getting an inexpensive test water kit and test your water from the tap.
Heck you could even turn it into a science experiment and have your kiddos help. |

Check with the state health dept. Should be able to send a sample in and get it tested.
Since this comes and goes I would be concerned that something is leaking into the underground water in the area of the well.

Location: Finally horseback again.... | Something else that you might want to look into is the possiblility of a backflow issue. Is there any places nearby that use chemicals, soaps, ect? carwash, nursery, farms, ect. If so, they may be backflowing chemicals into yor water lines and your the one getting it. It is so simple to contaminate an entire water supply system you would not believe it. as easy as a neighbor fertilizing their yard, leave the hose running in a puddle and the water supply system experience a drop in pressure... could be from a fire down the road, a leak, a main break, anything that takes away from the static pressure of the system. When that happens, the hose in the puddle sucks all the water in that yard into the potable water supply, boom you are drinking fertilizer from your neighbor down the road. |
