Location: California | A list of all of your horse's vital statistics. God forbid an accident occurs, anyone on scene can more quickly assess the situation. Pulse, HR, temp, etc. I created one really quickly and laminated it and taped it to the inside of my trailer...just a thought |

And your saddle
also an extra pair of pants/boots in case you dump a bucket all over yourself.

Location: Gainesville, TX | According to Martha Josey:
FOR YOUR HORSE Registration Papers Health Papers-Coggins Papers Saddle and Pad Over and Under or Bat Front and Back Cinches, Breastcollar, Headgear (competition and warm-up, and extra bridle) Tie-Down and Tie-Down Strap Leg Protection such as Overreach Boots, Combination Boots (front and rear) Rubber Bands Shin Guards Good strong halter and lead Hoof Pick Brushes and other grooming materials you use Blanket or sheet for cooling and protection show Rambo Blankets Buckets (feed and water) Hay-bag and hay Feed (having individual feeding already measured and in grocery sacks is always handy) Shovel or pitchfork (for keeping trailer clean) Fist Aid Supplies (including leg wraps, vet wrap, cotton pads, peroxide, alcohol, liniments, leg brace, poultice, a wound dressing medication, scissors; you want to be prepared if a horse strains a muscle or tendon, or get injured in any way. Depending on your experience, you might also carry needles, syringes and a painkiller such as Butazolidin or Banamine, in case of colic or pain; and Acepromazine, to tranquilize a horse in case of an accident and Hy-Flex for joints. Fly spray (even if you are not having any pest problems at home; sometimes you can go to a show and so many horses together seems to have caused a fly problem; mosquitoes are also bad at some places and since diseases are transmitted by insects, don’t take any chances) Towel and washcloth Extra horseshoes (sooner or later you will lose a shoe and it’s hard to find those right shoes when you are on the road) Water hose Scraper FOR YOUR RIG Insect repellent for people Spar tires for truck and trailer picture of Martha’s truck and trailer Tire changing equipment (jack, lug wrench, etc.) Flashlight Extra sets of keys to truck and trailer Black electrical tape Road Atlas Leather hole punch Safety pins Paper Towels |

| I think I might pack a package of rice. I dropped my phone in a water bucket once and it would have been nice to have immediately. |

Location: SE KS | we're going on a trail ride in June, so I too am making a list of items!!! We are going with someone else in their trailer. So I have the list of items needed, and have gotten a "carryall"/diaper bag to put the horse supplies in, and a tack bag to put halters, leads, bridles in. Also have horn bag & cantle/saddle bags to put important on the trail things in!! Hopefully I can stuff all the "needed" supplies into my various "containers" n keep track of it!!!

I've found gallon ziplock bags are great for grain, and the little baggies for supplements (if not liquid) easy to pack and the grain is already measured out. |

to add to this, spare tire, tools to change a tire, jack, possibly small air compressor ... or roadside assistance. OF course if your traveling with someone THEY should have these. |

Location: Texas | Always take extra hay. A jack. And tools! Like a screw driver, flashlight, phillips, hammer, electric tape, duct tape. Sounds stupid but let me tell you!
Snacks and water.

Location: Kansas | Sit down and think about everything you do with your horse before and after runs, then make a list of the items you need for those routines. When I travel, I take a full rig. It gets downright ridiculous how much crap I have but I am never going to be caught without something again.
For the horses: enough hay for a full extra day (space is usually tight for me) 2 5-gal containers of water (refill every time I leave a rodeo so I always have water that they'll drink when I get to the next stop) a hay bag for each horse unless I know that everywhere I park will have grass so I can toss it on the ground instead 2 or 3 water buckets Saddle & pad for each horse in the trailer Cooler, sheet and blanket for each horse Bridles - every one I own LOL. (For a one-day trip in someone else's trailer, I take each horse's competition bridle, an extra hack and an extra bridle w/bit so I have a backup if any of the competition bridles breaks) Polo wraps (minimum 6 sets per horse LOL - anyone who has looked in my trailer knows this is true) Bell boots - all of them LOL Rubbermaid tub full of grain, scoop, supplements (in small jars) and a small salt or mineral block (Chance loves mineral & salt blocks) Electric tape Duct tape Baling twine Baling wire Basket full of brushes, combs, hoof picks Liniment, poultice Underwoods & baking powder Clean rags - flour sack towels are my favorites for rubbing liniment on legs PHT Magnetic products - 3-in-1 wraps and bell boots Fly mask for each horse & fly sheet for each horse in the summer Air Power, Ventipulmin, Flair strips and Clearex (also need clean syringes for Air Power & Ventipulmin) Banamine, Bute, Lasix (which reminds me I need to get more just in case) Iodine, vet wrap, gauze pads, diapers, maxi pads (those last two are great for wrapping wounds) Photonic torch & batteries for it
For my dog and I: Extra set of clothes in the trailer at all times Sheets, pillows, comforter Fans or heater for trailer Extra AA batteries for the push lights in my trailer Phone charger so I can charge it while I drive Bluetooth headset GPS Books, magazines, Nook, tablet - something to entertain myself during dead time Dog food & treats Water dish (a small gladware container works well for this because it wil fit in the cupholders of my truck) Snacks for me, and an ice chest full of food & drinks |

AMEN I LOVE YOU.
I would rodeo with girls and they would bring the entire months worth of grain with them! I would just use ziploc bags and have everything pre-measured. I would just bring a water bucket and grain bucket for each horse, and the essentials.
Packing your own trailer is way different but I don't think you need as much as you think backup wise....
Extra cinch/headstall/ reins/ lead rope.
Stuff like bute/ banamine/ syringes/ gauze/ vetwrap
Blankets/pillows
Screws/ toolset
OH and lots of twine!!!

| Just a little tip, but everything in bags. I know it sounds simple but I started this last year. I have a CE bag that has all my BOT/pht/soft-rides stuff in it, its one of the large mesh bags with a zipper around it, anything therapeutic goes in that bag. I have a smaller CE boot bag that I put my horses boots/wraps in, I also put a couple mesh bags in it that I put my wraps in after they are dirty. I have a boot bag with my standing wraps and runners relief in it, I have have a bag with my magic cushion and everything that goes with it in it, then I have an extra bag that I use to carry stuff in. Most importantly I have my drug bag/box. I always have banamine, bute, lasix, and sed-ivet, and stuff to treat a wound with me just in case something happens. Another good tip with I am going to be hauling with someone I mix all the dry ingredients of my horses grain and put them in zip lock bags, it makes it easier than having to take bags of grain and supplements with you. That way I just have to take the liquid stuff with us.
I know this all sounds a little obsessive but it makes everything SOOO much easier. If I want put on my horses BOT stuff I just grab that bag, if I want to sweat her legs with runners relief I grab that bag. Its especially easy when are traveling with other people. |
