To get with a horse, I work pylons in a circle at high speeds, or pylons in the shape of funnel barrels, or poles. I will also turn into the fence so I can work on getting out of the saddle faster.
I will work barrels maybe 3-4 times a week, but I have trained all mine except for 2, and I sent the two out for a few months

Over exaggerate everything in slow work... with your self.. sitting and getting up.. switching hands. You can do it even at a walk, helps create muscle memory so you dont have to think about it as hard you just do it. I wouldn't recommend fast working your horse on any drills..just me barrels is hard enough on your horse. Just remind your self before the run and it'll happen gradually.

On my finished horses i dont slow work unless i need to tune something up. My younger horses i will slow work earlier in the week but days before competition i work hills or go on a nice trail ride and try and keep their minds fresh.

Do you work the pattern slow? I used to trot the pattern a lot and do everything perfect, it got to be muscle memory so to speak. When it came time to run I didn't even have to think about it.

Being that Im a total rookie barrel racer
(I've been at it for 3 years now, but still on my first barrel horse who I've made
) I dont know if this is the best advice, but I do tons of slow work and really focus on everything Im doing with my body
(keep my hands calm and low, look up over my horse's ears, use my outside leg to help my horse's hind end through the turn, get forward as I leave the barrel, etc
).
When Im making a run it just comes natural to do all of those things s I've practiced and practiced slowly, but to really get my timing right I have followed my calf roper hubby's advice and I kick. Im not kicking hard, but with each stride between barrels I keep my feet moving with my horse's stride and it really helps me to know when to sit and ask him to rate.
