a PhD.

In my land of research science I'm doing great with a M.S. but there are times I want to drop all the crap my boss has asked me to complete and go out on my own .... In order to do that I'd need an PhD.

I'm currently looking into a Transition To Teaching program so I can become certified to teach reading or language arts, probably at the middle/high school level. I've been told by our local school superintendent that reading is a really good field to go into because so many schools are hiring reading specialists right now, and I love to read. I have wanted to get a teaching license for a few years, but have had trouble finding the thing I would be most passionate about teaching every day, and I don't know why we didn't think of reading because it is probably my second favorite thing in the world besides horses.

Physician's Assistant! or full-blown doctor!!! (Internal Medicine) I wish my parents had been more pro-active in exposing me to 'what is out there in the world.... to options. And, unfortunately, my high school counselor did NOTHING to assist me (even though I was an honor student) regarding scholarships or direction. She actually told me, "Well, you are a farm kid, so there not many options for you." I was not a "popular kid" in the cliques, not a cheerleader, etc. So, I had to research - on my own - the CLEP test information and sign myself up to take the CLEP. I ended up getting credit hours for my ENTIRE FRESHMEN YEAR OF COLLEGE. And, YES, I did take the test results in and showed them to my high school counselor. She was, ahem, stunned. She was also, somewhat speechless, with the 26 on my ACT test. So much for "farm kids".

Anyway, if I could have a do-over in college.... it would be medicine. I do have a Masters in Business and I have had an astonishingly wonderful rewarding career. I am nearing a retirement that will be very comfortable .... but..... a career medicine would have been kicka** fun and exciting and would have fit my personality so much better.

So... young folks out there... don't let anyone stop you from going for your best life. Don't let "no" doors remain closed. Keep pushing them open. Set you goal(s). Do your research, do the work -- and reap the rewards.

The current project that I am working on at work has me seriously look into completing a mostly online Masters in Agronomy and placing a focus on Sustainable Agriculture.

Pretty excited and hope to start in the next 2 years.

I went in AgBusiness with a minor in finance.... I don't think I would I would it change it since that better fits job opportunities in my area, but had I been actively riding and running barrels (I quit when I was a junior and fell in love with Econ) when I finished HS I probably would have went into animal science.

If I was only taking into consideration what big $ job opportunities once I graduated (and disregarding what I would be passionate about) I would have gone into nursing or something pertaining to safety specifically pertaining to the oil & gas industry.

RunningKC, I have economics degrees.  They really aren't practical for real world skills unless you plan to get a doctorate.  Switch to accounting.  It's practical in any industry and extremely valuable if you want to be in business for yourself.
