More Energy?

My horse needs more energy!! He is a fairly lazy horse in general, but his energy has been really low lately. I know a large part of the problem is that the hay I am feeding isn't quite as good as I wish it was. I feed him a bit of oats and Nutrena Vitality, but I definitely need something more to fill the void. Any recommendations?

Your horse sounds like mine lol. The hay here is terrible this year bc of all the rain we got during the summer-its basically a filler, not much protein. I started supplementing mine with alfalfa cubes, its made a huge difference w/o making him stupid. He's still his laid back self, but he's much more on the muscle when we run

Oats are simple carbohydrate easily digestible just like chocolate instant high and sugar crash after.
I would try adding flax or stabilized rice bran, coconut oil to his oats. I may also put him on a vitamin supplement especially if the quality of hay is poor. I like red cell, but I don't think it is available in Canada anymore
