Location: Texas! | Well! I'm moving to Texas Sunday! I'll be in Athens, anything y'all can tell me about the arena? Horse related, weather, things to do outside of horsey things? |

Location: Texas | Athens is really nice. There is a good equine complex with covered arena, plenty of parking, etc.
Several BB's live near there. Hopefully they will let you know more.
Only thing I have to add is, it's HOT. You won't believe how hot it is in Texas in the summer.
Welcome to Texas!! |

Location: Do I hear Banjos? | There is a nice place to ride in Athens called Trace Trails. I can get you the directions if you are interested. It has miles and miles of marked, measured trails and primitive camping. Lots of stretches for long trotting to build up endurance and shoes are not necessary.

Location: Finally horseback again.... | Welcome!!! You will be about 45 minutes from me. There is tons of horse stuff in the area. Henderson County Fairgrounds has a nice covered arena. There are barrel races and ropings within an hour of Athens pretty much every night. It is a nice area. Very pretty with sandy soil. |

Location: Blissfully happy Giants fan!!! | Congrats! I live in Tyler but border Lindale. The cowboy church there has a good arena. I don't know who runs the church there and haven't been to their services but I know they have things going on.
Make sure you have dinner at Tara Vineyard and Winery at some point. Yummy and good wine.
You are close to Canton and Terrell-barrel races all of the time around both.
fun2run's post made me laugh. Yes it is hot but I came from a place where 115 degree weather in the summer wasn't uncommon (California). I don't think the heat here is bad at all. Now the humidity is a different story.
You will love the barrel races and Athens is not all that far from Dallas so you can get some city love in if you want.
Welcome!!! |

Location: Texas! | Thanks! I am really excited to get to ride all the time! I grew up in Florida and was in South Georgia for 4 years so I know hot and humid. Definitely not looking forward to humidity again but this winter has been so miserable here I'm so ready for a change! |

The humidity in north Texas isn't as bad as Florida or south Georgia. Temp gets higher though. |

Location: Texas! | I've only been to Dallas and that was for a few days in August and I remember it was pretty miserable but it was august so hottest time of the year and I hadn't been around humidity in a couple years. I'm sure I will adjust again! |

Location: Oklahoma | You will love Athens! I am also from Florida and lived in Georgia during the summers, Texas is hot, but not as humid as Florida or Georgia in my opinion. Athens is one of the prettiest towns in Texas to me, I just love the trees and hills! The barrel racing associations are great around there too! Good luck! |

Location: Texas | We are about 30 minutes from Athens and it is a nice little town. Lots of barrel races to go to with about an hour's drive. Tyler is close enough for any major shopping. Yes, it is hot, but that is what arena lights are for. Easier to ride in the heat than in 3-ft of snow. lol |

Location: Texas | Oh, and they have a very nice large Cowboy Church there. It would be a nice place to meet other horse minded people. |

I loved Athens! The scenery reminds me of Wisconsin without all the cold and snow. |

Location: hot, humid and dry...Gulf coast East of Houston.. | I go to Athens on occasion, its a cute little town, It seems like its mostly older people (retired) that live there. BB Emmylou (Melanie Halbert) lives in Athens too and has for years. There is a lot of horse type things to do there, and as others have mentioned, the cowboy church has a huge arena and has quite a few events there. The covered arena there has open arena nights there as well. |

Location: Texas! | I knew I could count on this board for some great insight!! I will definitely have to look into the cowboy church! That's a great idea for meeting people with similar interests :). My SO is staying up here atleast for a few months so I will be pretty much at r alone just my dog and horses :) I did it when I moved to Georgia and when I moved to Wyoming so I'm I'm not super worries about moving and not knowing many people yet. |

Location: Red Raiderland | WELCOME TO TEXAS!!! I live about 35 miles northeast of Athens and the area is beautiful. I would agree with what the others have all said. Tyler is the closest big town and Dallas is very easy to get to for BIG city stuff. You will have no shortage of barrel racing stuff or really any type of western horse stuff to do in your area. The summers are very HOT but if you lived in Florida and Georgia you will be just fine here. PM me if I can help with anything and again, welcome to the Lone Star state! |

Location: North Dakota | It gets HOT here! It is 90 at 10:00pm at night sometimes. A solid 100+ daily! You will need to ride early early or extremely late daily. Lots of great races and clubs here and the winter time is nothing compared to what you deal with! Bring some hay with you though, it hasn't rained here in months! |

| That's awesome! That's about 1 1/2 from me. Lots of barrel races everywhere around! Will you still be working for the same company or did that end? |
