We are contimplating putting my mare up for sale. She is 17 this year and needs maintenance. She would make a very nice Jr rodeo horse as she is still pretty competitive.
Before I make the decision to put her up for sale I will have a full lameness exam done and pass on all that info to a interested buyer and of course let them have a lameness exam done by a vet of there choice.
Are parents willing to buy a been there done that horse for the child that does need maintenance. I know mine did for me but didn't know if there was still a market out there. |

I agree, purchase price is the driver here. |

| If priced right and if the maintenance wasn't a pocketbook breaker, then Yes, I'd say marketable. |

I agree. I have a soft spot for faithful oldies.
However, it depends on price, and what the maintenance is. |

Location: Lost in the swamps | Yes there is a market for those that do require maintenance, price should reflect the type of maintenance required and the caliber of the horse, research your market, and compare. you will find a lot of horses that do require some sort maintenance at almost any age. i feel any horse you buy, they will at one point or another require something to keep them going. Its all about what the prospective buyers are willing to deal with. |

Location: Buffalo, Wyoming | She is a very consistent 2D-3D horse. I have ran her at a few pro rodeos and she has ran anywhere from .5 to .8 off some nice horses. She will be priced accordingly after we have seen the vet. As of right now I know she will need her hocks done every 3-6 months depending on how hard she is used. There may be more after we see the vet. |

Location: Texas | yes. most of my sister's horses are older, been there done that, but need a little maintenance. nothing bad honestly… like joint injections twice a year. But we got them when they were in their late teens early 20s and with pampering and her light weight.. they do really well.
We also buy them with the understanding that they aren't getting any younger, so the maintenance they start with will probably increase. But they are worth their weight in gold. We couldn't have afforded the horses she has had if they were 5-10 years younger. LOL!!
Her first good horse we bought as a 21 year old gelding.. and paid 9000 for him as a 21 year old- he was THAT good. We got three good years out of him before he colicked, cast himself in the stall, and fractured a bone in his knee. He was an awesome horse…worth every penny. We were going to retire him at the end of the season he was currently in- he had my sister in saddle position in the youth 1D and had her in the open 1D standings. he died about 4 races out from the end of the year and she ended up 3rd. He was the coolest horse ever. This is him at 24 clocking in the open 1D: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sit0tpt2qug |

I am not trying to get $15,000 to $20,000 out of her. I want her to go help a young kid reach some of their dreams. If I find the right people for her they will probably get a steal on a really nice horse.

If you price her right, you will find a good home for her. Like you said, I would be more concerned with finding the right home for her that won't abuse her and run the snot out of her… and treat her well and give her the good life. |

Yep... I got tired of being taken up the fence every trip out, so I sold one and bought 2 older ones last summer. Best decision ever!! I am having fun on the older ones. I don't mind maintaining one at all.
Since then I have people asking me all the time... where did you find these 2! Always have people asking if I know where to find an older safe & solid horse. |

| Absouletely you could find a good home for your horse. Some people are willing to pay whatever it takes for their kid to win. No matter what the maintenance is. |
