I am about to start my last year of college for my bachelors in radiologic science (x-ray) and that requires a 1 year externship in a hospital. Last night we had our draw to find out where we all get to go and I drew Missoula, MT. I will start my externship at St. Patrick July 1st. Does anyone have any advice about moving there? Where are good places to live, where should I avoid? My horse is coming too, so what about boarding or vets/shoers? I am interested in the move but won't know anyone from there and I am the only student going. It's exciting but nerve racking all at once! I was hoping to be able to visit my site over spring break but I'm having surgery then. :/

I am in Hamilton about 45 miles south of Missoula. I am sure there are some better areas in town to live but overall a good place to be and St Pats is a great hospital. There is a big vet clinic south of town Blue mountain they have several vets working out of it. I will try to find you some names of good places to board. There are getting to be more events close you will have to do a little hauling if you want to go a lot. When will you be up here ? You can pm me and I will give you my number and you are welcome to come down to our place to visit. I know several young gals who are from up that direction so maybe you can meet some of them. Might even be able to find a local who would be interested in boarding for you. Good luck with the move.

Oh lucky you! Missoula is beautiful! I don't know too much about the area but be sure to take advantage of the beautiful scenery and go on some fun trail rides. :)

Missoula is a great place. I am about 3 hours northwest of Missoula into Idaho. But we have raced in Missoula before. Tons of races in your area! Great people! Lots of races in Arlee too, which is about 30 mins from Missoula (if not closer). Missoula also has a PRCA rodeo and it draws the top 15 in the world!

Thanks everyone for your advice! I realy appreciate any and all input. It's a lot to sort out in only a couple of months, especially when I have never been to Missoula but I am really excited about the move and I think I'm going to really like it there! and cutnrunqhmt, I sent you a PM! :)

I've lived there for 5 years while I finished my bachelors and my doctoral degree. I've boarded horses there the whole time and have been at 4 different places. I've checked most of the other ones in town out as well and they were either full or I didn't think they were safe etc. You should be fine where ever you live in town but I would do your homework about where you put your horse! I can pm you my 2 cents if you want! You'll love the area though, it's beautiful :)

I'm headed down to Kalispell and Missoula tomorrow to see my best friend for the weekend and I would pack up and move there if I could. I LOVE NW Montana.

Welcome to Montana!

You'll love Missoula and that is a very good hospital in general. Although, I wish I could remember the name of the VERY young doc who looked at my Dad's chest xray and told him he had cancer instead of the pneumonia he actually had. That guy wasn't too impressive . . . but in general you have ended up with a great hospital and everyone there was really nice.

I'm 500 miles east of Missoula, so I'm not any real help, I'm afraid, but you'll get lots of good advice.

I am not up on all the places to eat ect but there is a wide variety of things to do there it is a big outdoor town so lots of hiking, skiing. The one place I would be carefull about being out and about at night is just around the University there have been a lot of assaults in the area. It is overall a safe place to live you will love the summers here unless we get forest fires then it is less fun but our temperatures are great. This winter has been tough but that is not our norm. Missoula is much more gloomy in the winter than down my way. You will like it and there is plenty of horse stuff to do.
