I just got a saddle with elk hide seat. It sure seems soft. I'm worried my blingy pockets will tear or scratch the seat. Has anybody had a problem with this?

I usually change into boring riding pants, and change back into my blingy pants when I'm wandering around.  I don't want to take the chance.

eventually the hair is going to get rubbed out anyways but yes blingy pants will scar the hide. I didn't know they were using elk hide now though.... who made it? I have a bunch of hides if someone can add it to one of my saddles. I bet it's really soft!

It's a Caldwell. I usually wear old boring jeans at home but like to wear my nicer blingy jeans to races. I just don't want to mess the seat up.

Boy, elk hide seems like an awfully soft leather for a seat.  I bet it's comfy but I would question the longevity of it.  We use elk hide horn wraps and they don't last near as long as the latigo or mule hide.

I worry more about the thousands I spent on my saddle than about making my butt look pretty.

That post made me LOL!  But yes, that is where I am at too.  I wear boring pants too.  I don't care what my butt looks like as long as it's stuck in the saddle.
I have Caldwell saddles too and just my opinion....but..........I wouldn't take a chance on ruining the seat in them with blingy pockets on pants.

Blingy pockets will mess up the Elk hide seats.

I would not ride in any pants that have the bling on pockets, my saddles cost to much to mess up over a fancy pair of pants, so yeppp I guess I look like a bum in my normal, old jeans

The elk hide is actually pretty durable (especially if you keep blackrock on it), but I have had problems with the blin jeans scuffing it up. You need something more like elephant to withstand the bling rubbing against it.

It's a leather conditioner and is recommended for the elk seats but can be used on the whole saddle. Amazon has a great price on it.

Caldwell uses an elk skin/hide....not a hair on hide, lol

To answer the question:  Yes, the blingy pants with scratch the seat....If you keep the blackrock on it you won't notice it as much.  It's like scratching your arm when you have dry skin, you'll see the little scratch marks that you wouldn't if you had just put lotion on.

I've seen many different type saddle seats destroyed by blingy butt pockets.
I have leather seats in my truck and do not allow passengers with any type of bling butts to even sit on them.

I had a shiloh with the elk hide seat. I actually got it because they said it would be more durable then suede and it was supposed to be more grippy? I rode it in my bling butt pants and never had an issue. I probably wouldn't spend the extra money again because i didnt think it was that much better then suede but it didn't get tore up from the bling.

Ugh!  I have sworn off blingy pants!  I just got a brand new (black, even bigger ugh) truck back in August and I got in it one day and I just knew that it had made a scratch... and of course, it did.  It's not like it's 2-3" or anything, but I know it's there and it still makes me mad!  No more bling for me!!

Long story short...I had my Caldwell fall off my horse's back and it indeed scuffed up my elk seat and that wouldn't have happened if it had been suede. I love the elk seat.

Man I bet that made you sick when your saddle hit the ground.
