Went to a local jackpot, different association then I regulary run so not familiar with them personally.  It was muddy in the warmup area so during exhibitions they were letting people exercise their horses in  the arena behind the third barrel.  It is not a big pen and the announcer was asking everyone to be considerate and aware of those exhibitioning but some were still loping very close to the barrel.  I asked the guy working the alley could he ask them to just stand in a corner went I went, I wanted to make a run, didn't want a wreck plus if horse doesn't work won't know if it is because there are 10 horses loping behind the 3rd or just him or me.  He was not rude but I got a little lecture about how if this was a rodeo blah blah blah and how we sure do things different down here then they do up north.  I don't let much get to me and just said I would appreciate it and he did have them move to a corner.  I always think it is funny when they compare a jackpot  to a rodeo because it is not a rodeo and if it were a rodeo there would be no exhibitions and everyone would be warming up in the mud and not behind the 3rd barrel.

I'm sorry, you paid for the use of the arena for an exhibition, I think that was stupid and completely unsafe for others  to be warming up while someone is running.

I do not think you were out of line at all and I agree, how can he compare this situation to a rodeo. Nothing like one at all.

No, you were not out of line.  I'd have asked for my $$ back and went home.

You were not out of line. where I ride sometimes riders will group up and go in together for time onlys. but the one on the course has the say so about the others at their moment.

I stuck to my guns, my $$ and my arena for that 60 seconds. Was really wondering if yall do it different up north since he made that comment.  He should not have been annoyed at all.  My friend was in line behind me and same thing, wanted the riders in the corner.  He called us jackpot queens.  I laughed and said well I guess that makes you the servant and the queen wants the arena safe when she runs.

I have ridden where people were in the arena during time onlys but the arena is huge. one gal asked for everyone to leave so she could enter and see if the horse would be a jerk at the gate. we all were glad to help!

Nope. I paid for that arena for my full 1 minute. If I want people out, then I really want them out. I've kicked people out before, sometimes politely, sometimes cordially, and sometimes I've had to pull the '*****' face to get my point across.

It's sort of like when I want to trot/lope a colt through three times in a row. I paid for it, I wrote myself in for three go's, and I'm not sorry to do it. Sometimes there's been a well known or two chomping at the bit behind me, but I just smile and let them know nicely that I'll be finishing shortly. I'll catch plenty of dirty looks, but I paid just like everyone else.

Another thing that bothers me about producers of small races, sometimes they're exhibitioning without the clock. I always ask for the clock on, sometimes I've hauled somebody in just to see their timed progress in that pen. Sometimes it's gotten me a dirty look, but for goodness sake I paid for it!

I know you didn't start this as an exhibition rant, and I'm afraid I got off topic, but that's just what leapt to mind. :)

I understand, I wanted that exhibition to mimic a run as close as I could. We all have things we are working on and it is not for others to decide how we should do it. We always have the timer on.

No you were not out of line.

First of all- its your 60 seconds in the arena.
Second of all- if you wanted the rodeo atmosphere you'd be at a d*mn rodeo and not the 4D you went to. You went there to get practice, and that's what you paid for, and thats what you should be able to do.

not to mention, one time at a race a couple years ago the weather was horrible and they let the next set of 5 sit in the arena behind the timer when we ran. my novice horse at the time ran, he saw the horses in the pen and turned back to them and almost no timed. might as well have after that LOL.

I'm from way up North. Went to a jackpot last year, that was super tiny, and the outdoor was muddy as heck. Guess what, you still warmed up the outdoor and ran your expo in the arena. It's your time, you pay for it. I've never been anywhere were they have let us use the arena during exhibitions. It doesnt matter if you pay a dollar or 5 or 50 for that time, it's yours, you get to use it how you like.

All I am going to say is that there are a lot of people around here who have never been to an actual jackpot and have no concept about people training their horses. They think exhibitions are to raise money and you are out there playing. Just roll with the flow or don't go back. There is a group around here that does not know how to figure out the 4 divisions. The actually called the police on a friend who tried to show them. This is one of those Cowboy Churches and I do not think one person has been to a 4D barrel race.

i went to an open show once with exhibition barrels and a 4D jackpot afterward. They could not get over that exhibitions you could circle the barrel multiple times, or go to the fence and go around to take your second exhibition. They kept no timing us!

I got yelled at for excessive training over the loudspeaker for going around the second barrel three times during an exhibition.  I was going fast enough to be well under the 60 seconds so I thought I was fine correcting my mare that was spooking at the banners on the fence, guess I was wrong, lol.
