Little update on my mare that was diagnosed with HSS. Started her on the higher levels of Magnesium oxide 4 weeks ago, then added Melatonin about 3 weeks ago and the Cypraheptidine 2 weeks ago. Saturday I was able to ride her with no nose net or mask on a sunny day with some wind also and I was able to walk trot and lope her with no issues. She was a little fresh from not being ridden in more than a month since the incident when I decided her issues were not behavioral and that something was really going on. I tried riding her about 3 weeks ago shortly after we added the Melatonin and was able to walk and jog her but loping started her into a sneezing attack followed by extreme face rubbing. Saturday she had to snort or blow one big time like she was clearing her nose when I picked up the lope and that was it, the face rubbing afterwards was gentle and didn't last long at all.
Just wanted to say thank you to everyone that shared ideas or experiences with me when I was searching for more answers....

Thank you for sharing what is working. I have a mare that I just love but her HS has gotten so bad, I can not ride her. We have a new, young vet in the area and this is the first case she has worked with. She is trying, so I printed off this post so I can share it with her.

That is good news.
I tried the melatonin and didn't like the personality change in my horse plus she wouldn't shed out so she got really hot in the summer.  But it worked for the head shaking with the nose net.  This year I doubled up on the msm and with the nose net it seems to be working but we haven't gotten into the spring good yet.  Keeping my fingers cross because it was nice to be running her again.

I had a mare that was a head shaker. She ended up being a bleeder. The kids could walk her all day long but get her into a trot or lope and work her, she would bleed! I know other things can cause this but thats my experience with a head shaker.I dont know a thing about bleeders but I guess she would shake her head because she was anticipating what would happen if she was worked. who knows.

I have an extreme headshaker and I tried the ciproheptadine but didn't like how he felt on it. Right now he is strictly on herbals which helps the actual headshaking but you can't ride him. Once his Blood pressure starts to go up, he gets really anxious and has panic issues. I'm hoping that my vet will listen to the people docs and prescribe something different for him. I may add the Mag Oxide and see if that helps.

the recommended dose of Melatonin for a horse was 12 mg but my vet prescribed that I use about 14 on my mare as she is a shade under 17 hands and @ 1400lbs, we give it to her 1x a day in the evening feed. The Cypraheptadine I think is 200mg and I started her out on 1/2 cc twice a day to see how she would react then upped it from there. She gets 1cc once a day now unless I plan on riding then I give it to her 2x a day. This is all very new so still working on what works when and how for her.

Just bumping this up for anyone that might be looking for help...theres lots of info out there and you just kind of have to figure out what works for your horse. Also, if it continues and nothing you do training wise works, give them the benefit of the doubt. This mare has been a super star her whole life, literally took her to town the 6th time she'd ever had a saddle on her and entered a W/P walk jog training show, 3rd class she ended up placing. She would learn by leaps and bounds and always always was a joy to ride, until this. I think we are headed down the right path with her and just want to try to help others that may come across this issue at some time in their lives. I don't know a lot about it, but I do know what seems to be helping this mare right now. She was better with just the Magnesium oxide added, got even better with the Melatonin though she did have a sneezing attack like I said the first time I tried to lope her but at least she wasn't dangerous like she had been 3 weeks prior to starting any treatment options, with the addition of the Cypraheptadine so far she was almost back to herself.
