He refuses to eat raw food- will let it sit there for days, I have tried too many to count expensive grain free foods, I have cooked his food for 3 months and no change.  We have him on over the counter antihistamines and that does give him relief but would love too treat the cause and not just the symptom.  We have drawn blood and vet has no clue.  Thanks!

My lab gets hot spots and we switched her to Purina Pro-Plan Select for skin. It is made primarily of salmon. I can't say this is 100% what helped her, but she hasn't had any since we switched to it. When she would get one I would start her on oral steroids to get her to stop tearing at it and put vetericyn on the hot spot. Our other lab has never had a problem, but their hair is totally different. Hers is more soft and thick and I think that contributed to trapping the heat and bacteria that would get them started. They suck but luckily she hasn't had any in awhile.
Edit to add that I would shave the hot spot first and get as much hair away from it as I could. This was always very fun.

This is what I was going to recommend.  Every summer my ancient Appaloosa does a number to her neck and front legs from constantly itching them with her teeth.  I keep her fly sprayed and feed a bug off supplement, but it never worked.  I talked to a rep and he suggested I give it a try and within days her bloody, oozy sores were dried up and starting to heal.  I was shocked and so happy!  It is a miracle spray for sure!

Try a fish oil pill like you get for humans.  Or as SG said the ground Flax.  My two labs get a fish oil pill morning and night as well as a high quality dog food.  You may want to flea bomb the house and try spraying down his kennel with Tempo or something as well.

This! Comfortis and a couple rounds of steroid shots have done the trick for our pit/hound mix. We battled this for almost 4 years until we put her on the Comfortis.
