My youngest brother is a senior in high school, and his class is planning their senior trip to Galveston in early May. But now my mother (one of the class sponsors) is concerned about the beaches being open by then because of an oil spill. (I knew nothing about this - I have been buried in work most of the day so please correct me if I'm wrong). Any ideas on the odds of the Galveston Island State Park beach being open to visitors by then?

I think there is a possibility that it will be open.  It just depends on how long it will take for them to get it all cleaned up depending on a number of circumstances.  The news said this is major.  They showed a lot of birds on the beach this afternoon that have been covered with the oil.  Most cruise ships are still in port.  It has basically shut the Houston Ship Channel down and that is a major port for the U.S. and other countries.

I'm not sure how the oil spill will affect the beaches.  I do remember hearing that it shouldn't affect willife, so I'd think the beach will be fine.
BUT, I have been to Galveston once around the same time of year and it was awful.  They only cleaned the seaweed off a small stretch of beach and the mosquitoes would carry you away.  Everywhere we went people were packing bug spray.
Hopefully it won't be like that for their trip!

So I just saw SHR's post saying the oil spill is major.  Oops!  Apparently I don't know what I'm talking about, sorry!

I'm from Galveston. You can keep up with reports through the local paper: www.galvestondailynews.com. They are working quick to clean up the oil spill.

Galveston Island starting with Stewart Beach on Seawall Blvd where all the hotels are and I45 ends has always had dirty gray sand and gray sea water.... this is approx. 1 mile west from the mouth of the ship channel ...

Most people do not realize the Galveston Island State Park is privately owned and the state does not have anything there .... it is located approx. 11 miles west of the above and the sands and water are much cleaner too .... you will always have tar globs in the sand around Galveston ....

The channel is narrow and they should be able to contain and remove most of the oil before it gets into the ocean end ...

Just remind little brother that salt water and sun reflected off the sand will burn his hide up in no time .... so use lots of sun block because once you see pink hide you are going to be miserable for a week .... lol ..

I live near Galveston but on the mainland. It is a long barrier island and the spill has occurred at one end of it. I think by the time May rolls around, the cleanup will be near completion and and in an isolated area. There is still plenty of beachfront all the way to the West End and many other things to experience such as The Strand, Moody Gardens, and Schlitterbahn Water Park. I know it's not on teenagers' minds but the sun is intense and in order to not be miserable nursing sunburn, I highly recommend slathering the sunscreen on all exposed skin. Have a great time and welcome to Texas!
