I teach a Social Skills class for Autistic students and students with behavior disorders.  I'm coming to that time of year when I feel like I've done so much, yet so little, and have a hard time coming up with lesson plans.  We've gone over lots of things from making friends, to behaviors in public, to doing taxes.  These are high school age kids, most of them are very bright academically, just really behind socially and in maturity.

So what are some things you see (or don't see) in today's society that you'd like our young people to learn?

I had no idea that's what you did.  I give you kudo's.  What a rewarding job but I bet it can be a hard one too.
I have no ideas for you.  I taught riding lessons for a few years to handicap kids and adults with a huge range of handicaps.  My job was easy though, I just had to teach them to enjoy horses.

My dream job would be to open a therapeudic riding school.  Wish I had the funds for an indoor arena, that would be a start!

I don't know if this is even possible to teach, or if you're allowed to... I always wondered why in the world there was no required classes that taught you anything about debt, paying bills, managing your finances, what the difference between "good" and "bad" debt is. I feel like I was taught so much in high school and yet teachers skipped over (or weren't allowed) obvious things that every single person has to do and learn.

Your job sounds really rewarding :)

We have talked about credit cards and debt a little bit.  Some of them have debit cards and we've talked about how those got him into trouble.  :)  We haven't gotten much deeper about debt because I'm not sure they'd get it, but I can sure give it a whirl! I agree that it's something that really isn't taught, but should be.

I would second the whole finance thing. Maybe mimic the idea of a reality store.

Give the students a "job" with a "salary" and then have them pick out certain houses (House A: $1,000 mortgage, House B: $800 mortgage) ect. and then have them select different car insurances, car payments, ect...

And they have to balance it all out of the salary they get from their job.

At the end if they are in the hole-give them a Zero candy bar-and if they are not give them a Pay Day candy bar!

I'm probably preaching to the choir on this idea but if you haven't shown the movie "Temple Grandin" to them, it might be something you could build a lesson plan around.  She also has some teaching ideas on her website but as I've said, if you are in this field, you probably already know that.  Thanks for what you do -- that has to be a tough niche to teach in.
