Location: Louisiana | On the afternoon of 3/24/14, my good friends Micah Goins & Wade Salter lost their barn and 7 beautiful, talented, much loved horses to fire. This was a new barn that they had recently finished building on their new place near Eros, Louisiana. Fortunately, neighbors were able to save two horses, Ritchie & Hummer. Among the horses who perished was the beautiful black AQHA stallion Chain of Events, an NBHA Youth World 1D Champion (ridden by Jody Nelson), multiple arena record holder, & winner of over $100,000 in barrel racing. Others lost in the fire included proven barrel champion Firewater Tri and youngsters with bright futures ahead of them. Micah & Wade are passionate about their horses and the sport of barrel racing, and my heart is breaking for them. There are some fund raisers set up and a benefit barrel race in the works to help them rebuild their barn. I am trying to set up a PayPal account to accept donations, also. I can't stress enough what good people Micah & Wade are and what a terrible loss this is for them. As Wade said, "It's not about the money or even the time spent training them. They were our children. Our lives revolved around those horses." RIP Chain of Events (Blackie), Brother Is (Brother), Firewater Tri (Tri), No Siesta For Fiesta (SiSi), Azurroco (Rocky), Jolie, & Chasin Cash Brown. Edited to add that Linda Albritton, Twin Star Ranch, was also in partnership on some of these horses, so she suffered a great loss, too.

Location: Texas | This is a horrific loss. I can't imagine lossing any horses.
Were none of the horses nor the barn insured? I can't imagine having horses of this caliber and not having them insured to protect your losses. And the same with the barn. While it is nice of everyone to offer a hand when in need, I have an issue with giving people money when they could have protected themselves with an insurance policy. Insurance does cost money, but there seemed to be no shortage of money when it came time for them to purchase all of these horses. If they were insured, what does this money go towards? I know I will get a lot of kick back for posting this, but it's something that I feel needs to be said. |

Obviously you have never had a tradgedy like this nor been close to anyone who has. There are a ton of extra expenses that are not covered. And insurance doesn't start writing checks immediately.
When someone dies do you refuse to send a donation to the chairity of their choice because they should have life insurance?
Let folks send a few dollars to express their sympathy.

Location: MD | My heart goes out to Micah, Wade and all of the connections. I cannot imagine what they are suffering right now. Heck, every time I see a pic of Blackie posted, I start crying, remembering seeing him running in his glory days. The fact that anyone should chose not to be supportive in this time is just that, their choice. I guess I was just raised better than to be so callous as to broadcast such thoughts when others are suffering. |

Sending a memorial donation to a designated charity when someone passes is totally different than opening the check book to pay for things that should be repaid by insurance.
I never said anyone should not donate. I just think that people need to know what the money will be used for. They still have other horses and their home.....

You're right. They do still have other horses. And that is exactly why they need to rebuild their barn ASAP. Since you don't know them or the details of all this, perhaps you should refrain from your negative comments at this horrible time for them. I assure you that any money taken in will go toward the rebuilding of their barn. But if you choose to think it will go to a party fund or something frivilous, that's your loss. Kind hearted people want to help in a situation like this, and helping them rebuild is the best way to do it at this time. No one is asking you to make a donation, and after reading your comments, we certainly don't expect you to. |
