Location: South | My barrel horse only has one eye. Lost her eye about 2 years ago in a pasture incident. To this day we still don't know what happened. I was a little worried about her career after the accident, but luckily my vet told me to not lose hope. Needless to say after her 3-4 weeks off, she bounced back like a champ. She lost her right eye, so I have to say "ho" on the first barrel to let her know when to turn. She also still works cattle too. The season after the incident most people didn't know that she had a disability until our year end awards when they seen her up close for the first time.

| I have a one eyed mare, lost the left eye.. She lost it less than a year ago..I tried to have a prosthetic put in and it was too big... then when we got a smaller one but the stitches would not hold. I just had it sewn up and she was totally fine.
She is mainly my rope horse and she ropes both the head and heel side.
I have been starting her on the barrels to the left and she is progressing fantastic.. I do have to help her on the first but she is eating up the second and the third. And she is pretty little so I think she would make a pretty nice pole horse too.
But with all that said, she never has any issue with not being able to see on that side. She is not spooky and jumpy. I can walk up on that side and it doesnt bother. She has learned to trust and I think that is the major part of overcoming an eye injury.

I love that horse.
Another one-eyed wonder (not a barrel horse but worth mentioning) that I love is Rey Jay. Having only one eye was said to have made him gritter and give more effort in the pen:
The story of Rey Jay's contribution to the Quarter Horse begins with his overcoming a handicap that allowed him to compete and out perform many of the industry's elite cutting horses. Rey Jay sustained an eye injury as a weanling that impaired the vision in his right eye. It is believed that when the eye was irritated and inflamed that he could see about 15% of his normal vision. This handicap became a trade mark of Rey Jay's desire to succeed as a cutting horse, earning him a place in cutting horse history.

Location: Midwest | Here's a pic of Frenchmans Guy. You can see the eye is not there.

Side note, I used to jump a horse that was blind in one eye. He was the best beginner horse at that barn. He was a lesson horse... just about everyone who started there rode him. I'll try to find a photo later.... He died of colic when I was a kid, and I was beyond heartbroken. |
