| For all of you out there that have horses with blue eyes what do you do? I've heard varying opinions from different vets about whether or not to have a flymask during the winter (we get snow so light reflecting off snow) and during the summer. Is it a myth that blue eyed horses are more prone to cancer of the eye? My mare has light skin around her eyes (no eyeliner).
Thanks! |

Location: So. Cali. | I have a coming 16yr old blue eyed gelding who I've had since he was 4. He is light sensitive, and noticably has trouble keeping his eyes open on bright summer days. One is surrounded by white, no liner, the other is surrounded by gold with liner. I only fly mask him in the summer and the only additional care he has needed is sunscreen on the eyelid that is surrounded by white. No other issues. BUT, I'm in So. Cali. and we rarely get snow so... guess I'm not too much help. In the times we did get snow, no I did not mask him

Location: Sperry, OK | It's not the "blue eye" that is more prone to cancer, it's the white around the eye that is more prone due to sun damange (the colored skin help to protect), this why a lot of people will tattoo around the eye to darken the skin. I know that in humans light colored eyes are more prone to develop cateracts and need to be careful and always wear sunglasses.. so this would probably be trure for horses too. |

| I have a cremello as well :) Was the tattooing expensive or a lengthy procedure? Did your vet recommend it? I haven't had my mare long but the vet that did the vet check just said to watch her for sun burn around her eyes especially her eyelids because of her light coloring and then my vet said I should have a flymask on all the time ect ect. She does get squinty eyed a bit, I notice it more on really bright windy days, she doesn't hide in the shelter and doesn't seem to struggle on brighter days. |
