| I'm buying a truck this Summer. Looking at a Dodge 2500 between 2004-2006 or a Ford 250 between 2007-2009... Any advise? Personal experiences, MPG, etc? Thanks |

Location: Idahome | Be careful on an 06 Dodge. I can't remember if it is the late 06 or early (someone can clarify), but they had some issues. I have an 03 Ford now and while it is comfortable to ride in and tows good, it doesn't turn worth a **** and it sucks to start in the winter if not plugged it. When we do buy a new truck, we have already decided to go with Dodge. My family grew up with them and this was the first Ford I have had. It really isn't a bad truck, I just like the Dodges better. |

Location: Do I hear Banjos? | I had either Fords or Chevy's all my life. Then...I decided on a 2005 Dodge 2500 Diesel with the 5.9L Cummins engine. It's a long wheel base (Quad cab with Long bed)...and yet it is FAR easier to maneuver than my 2009 Chevy short bed ever thought of being. This truck pulls like a champ and I absolutely love it.
Go with the 5.9 Cummins and you will not be dissapointed. |

Location: Montana | We had an 06 Dodge 2500 crew cab long box with the 5.9 Cummins 4x4 and we really liked it. Averaged pretty good fuel mileage too (I'm thinking 18 on the highway not pulling). Haven't tried the newer Fords...I am a Ford fan but WILL NOT have a 6.0 liter diesel. I'm interested to see how the 6.7 liter diesel does and how reliable it is. The last three trucks we have had have been Cummins (an 01, an 06, and now a 94...on the 94 we lucked into finding it as it was perfect for what we need it to do) and have NOTHING to complain about as far as reliability. Love em. The only thing I can say is where our trailer is parked, a long box with a crew or extended cab is a little hard to maneuver, but that has nothing to do with the truck but where our trailer is parked. |

I have no idea what my diesels get MPG wise. I'm sure it's not great. |

I have heard 04-08 dodges have issues, not sure on the Fords though. I am a die hard Dodge fan. But will be the first to say that I think Fords have a superior interior for comfort and looks.
I think you should look at everything available in your price range and do a ton of homework and research on it. Anytime you buy used you take risks. |

I have an 06 and it is a good truck, the automatic transmission is not as strong as the 08, but the 08 standards have a computer glitch, there is a bog, my parents cut the Catoloic converter out, the bog went away.
I do know there is a class action law suit going on about the bog in the 08, it will be interesting to see what comes of that.
Fords in those years have injector problems. 2006 seem to be the worst

Location: MD | sold my 99 dodge ram 1500... bought a '12 ford F-250 super duty last year. I'm currently shopping for another dodge. It his plenty of power but my trailer sways all over, I've gotten this thing stuck in dry, short grass. my dodge sucked gas like it was nothing, but it was also in a bit of... shall we say... disrepair. |

Location: Randolph, Utah | We have an 01 dodge with almost 300K miles on it, still runs and pulls like a champ. Then we have an 05 dodge and it runs and pulls great. Tons of power!
Both trucks are 2500 with stick shift.
I did drive a new ford last fall I'm not sure how the pulling power is but it could sure go fast, and it was so smooth riding. |

Location: Willows, CA | We run a 09 Dodge 2500 for the business. It has just under 100k miles on it and has only been back to the dealer twice, and that was for two recalls. Other than that it just got brakes, and U-joints. No other repairs, just normal oil changes and one set of tires. This is the most reliable truck I have ever owned. It is a Cummins with automatic and 4x4. I have always been a Ford fan for towing horses, but this Dodge has been great. Dodge had a big discount going when I bought it and it was priced almost $14k under what a Ford or Chevy would have cost me that day. I had to give it a try at that difference in price. Glad I did. |

You're problem isn't that it's a Ford. It's that it's a 3/4 ton. My F350 Ford long bed handles a trailer way better than a 1 ton dodge. I've pulled with both.....
To each their own, but I won't own a Dodge. Just stay away from late '03 to '07 Fords. There was a article in one of the car magazines that had a list of cars and trucks to never buy used. The 6.0 liter Ford was on it and some Dodge trucks were included, just don't remember years. |

Location: Montana | We have an 07 Dodge, big horn. We bought it new. Love the truck, we get 22 empty and 18 loaded. The trucks that were produced in the first half of the year have the 5.9 and do not have the imission stuff the those made in the last half do (the trucks made in the last half have the 6.7). They are hard to find, we get offers from dealerships all of the time trying to buy this truck from us. This specific truck made diesel of the year above all the others. Other then normal maintence we have had no problems with it. |

| Stay away from the 6.0 Ford engines. You will spend more time in the shop then on the road. |

Too much work goes into them. I have a 2004 dodge 2500 and i LOVE my truck. Sadly it has a lot of issues that are of no faults of the truck.
The kid ran the hell out of this truck and i have been slowly fixing it. And with all its issues its never left me stranded and (knock on wood) its never had any motor or tranny issues.
Wanted to add I get 20 MPG empty and 15 loaded with 3 horses and a steel trailer.

Location: North Texas | I would not touch a 04-06 Ford 6.0-6.4 Powerstroke w/ a ten foot pole! I am not real up to date on Dodges. But not a Dodge fan either. The Cummins is perhaps the better powerplant, but the 94-03 1/2 Ford Powerstroke is my favorite. And the 99-03 Ford is a much better truck than the 94-97. The later model 2010 and later Ford Powerstrokes are proving themselves to 'King of The Mountain'......................
However, many Rodeo people swear by Dodge. True story (I told numerous times on here) in 1999 I was riding in mid 90s Dodge 4x4 Cummins Automatic, on road and the ride was so rough, I was hitting the passenger side headliner w/ my head! I won't own anything but a Ford Powerstroke!

I couldn't agree with you more about mid 90's Dodges. The 94 Dodge Cummins we have is fine with a trailer behind it, but it is very rough to ride in without a trailer. But they are built heavy duty for a lot of hard use. The 2006 Dodge crew cab long box Cummins we had had a lot nicer ride. We also had a 99 Ford V10 gas, and the ride on that was much more like a car, but the fuel mileage left some to be desired (it averaged 12 MPG no matter what speed you went, how careful you drove, etc.).
The way I figure it, you have your pros and cons with each kind of truck, so you have to figure out what you like best and what works best for you. |

Location: North Dakota | I had a dodge around that year and it cost us more in repairs than we paid for it. The transmission went out just after the milage warrenty expired, we had it replaced and within 2 years it burned again. Had three radiators put in, the eletrical computer system replaced which burned two days later and smoked the inside of the cab up. Replaced eletrical again and the warning systems would go on and off. Lots more to list but the experience I had with dodge is that they are junk! Try GMC it will last and is much better quality! You pay more but it will last years longer!!!!

Location: NOT at Wal Mart | True story, 12 Ford F350, 4X4, 13 GMC 3500, 4X4, 13 Dodge 3500 4X4, pulling same trailer Sundowner 3 horse, small LQ, same route, same driver. Not sure of the rear-ends in the trucks. ONLY difference in the trucks was/is suspension, the Dodge has Shocks and a leveling kit. All trucks stock other than that. Results: The GMC won hands down with acceleration/power, Ford second, Dodge last. The amount of power the GMC made was significant and VERY noticeable from the get go! Both Ford and GMC continued to make power higher into the RPM's where Dodge didnt, choked into the higher RPM. Was a fun test and now I know what truck has more power. |
