Location: Bastrop, Texas | I read where the case in Iowa was not the neuropathic strain but the horse still developed the neurologic disease. They are now recommending a modification of the vaccine schedule as a result of this. I'd recommend people to look this up. |

Location: Texas | From my micro notes over EVH-1, all it takes is a single amino acid substitution to create a neurotropic strain of EHV-1. So for that reason I would be vaccinating for EHV-1. However, there is no vaccine for the neuropathic strain of EHV-1β¦ so there is no 100% protection from EHV-1 no matter what- which is why people need to stay home in those areas!
The only way to combat EHV myeloencephalopathy is management practices-
ISOLATE animals
DISINFECT
restrict movement for a month
^^^this came straight from my microbiology lecture over EHV-1 from Monday of this week. |

I couldn't get your link to work but I think this is the article you were after? Rockinas mentioned she was giving extra Lysine also. My horses get it in their PP but I'm waiting for an order to get here so I can feed extra. How Can Lysine Supplementation Help Treat Equine Herpesvirus Infections?By Dr. Bryan Waldridge · May 20, 2011Lysine is an essential amino acid for horses. In cats and humans, lysine supplementation has been prescribed for the treatment of herpesvirus infections, which can cause keratitis (inflammation of the cornea of the eye) or dermatitis. Shedding of feline herpesvirus in nasal secretions was decreased in cats supplemented with L-lysine, compared to cats that did not receive L-lysine. Equine herpesvirus (EHV) infections are associated with abortion, neurologic disease, respiratory tract infections, coital exanthema, or keratitis. Equine herpesvirus-1 (EHV-1) infections can cause severe neurologic disease, and supplemental lysine has been suggested as a potential preventive or treatment for EHV-1 encephalomyelitis based on its use in other species. In humans, the success of lysine supplementation depends on the dose administered, the amount of lysine and arginine in the patient’s diet, and how well an individual absorbs dietary lysine. The amino acid arginine is required by herpesviruses for replication. Compared to the proteins that make up the cells of its infected host animal, the proteins produced by herpesviruses contain more arginine and less lysine. Lysine appears to antagonize arginine metabolism by:1. Competing with arginine for reabsorption in the tubules of the kidney. This promotes the loss of arginine in the urine. 2. Increasing activity of the enzyme arginase, which breaks down arginine. 3. Supplemental dietary lysine competes with arginine for intestinal absorption. The more lysine in the diet, the higher the chance that it will be absorbed rather than arginine. 4. Increased lysine competes with arginine for entry into cells, similar to dietary absorption. In humans, several different doses of lysine have been investigated for the treatment of herpesvirus infections. The success of lysine supplementation depends on the dose administered, the amount of lysine and arginine in the patient's diet, and how well an individual absorbs dietary lysine. The average daily maintenance requirement of lysine in an adult, 1100-pound (500-kg) horse is 27.1 grams. Apparent lysine digestibility in horses is reported to range from 64-79%. In horses, a dose of 15 grams of L-lysine by mouth every 12 hours has been suggested for EHV-1 infections. L-lysine supplementation may be beneficial for at-risk horses that have been exposed during an EHV-1 outbreak. The replacement of arginine by lysine in cells is gradual, and lysine supplementation is less likely to be effective in horses that are already showing clinical signs of neurologic disease. There were girls that were at the Winona run that then came to Sioux Falls, SD where many of our local girls were at. Its all very scary. My lysine is on the way but don't know how long it has to be in their system before it helps. |

Where did you order yours from? Maybe I need to get some as a precaution......this was a small (35) jackpot....I found it odd she would be hauling down to lawrence to run! |

| If there's a feed mill near you, there's a good chance they would have some if they mix hog rations. I'm in NE SD, and the mill I work at orders it by the ton! In the Sioux Falls area, AgriCare Nutrition on Cliff would probably have some. I think they also have a location in Huron. |

Location: Missouri | Very interesting. I take lysine as a preventative to my chronic shingles. Since shingles is a form of the herpes virus, it makes since. I am going to call and ask my vet, but in case they aren't familiar with this, is there a difference in the compound given to equine? We haven't hauled since the outbreak began, but this is getting way to close to home, and the season is just starting. |

Hey Kristina! Do they resell it and roughly what would it cost by the lb? Where is the mill you work located? Thanks! |

Hello, everyone I want to take a moment to let you know that the horse that tested positive for EHV-1 is a resident of Crystal Creek Stable in Marion. This anim...al was shipped to a farm in Minnesota where it spent one day, then returned directly back home. This horse did not stop at any facilities in Iowa on the way back to the stable. Again, this horse made no stops in Iowa between Minnesota and it's resident stable. Therefore no other horses in our area were directly exposed to this animal except for the horses at this barn. We have requested that there be no horses transported in or out of this facility for at least two weeks . Any questions please contact us at 319-366-6441. ~ Charles Abraham, DVM
From the other ehv thread. This horse was in MN and exposed there. It would appear that exposure once it returned home was limited.
Let's keep in mind that we are talking about 9 horses. Not 90. Outbreak, not epidemic. Deep breathes. Work with your vet. We are immune boosting, going to start on lysine. Taking dysinfectant for our stalls at bonus race and generally being alert and cautious.
I don't advise throwing caution to the wind here, but I'm not sure hiding under the rock is needed either (exceptions being barns that house horses with compromised immune systems to begin with, the very old, the very young, or the recently ill). I like to think we're standing on the rock, looking around, gathering all information and listening to our professional vets.
I'm not a vet, nor have I ever played one on the big screen, these opinions are my own and have been formulated through conversation and consideration with my vet, hauling partner/barn owner and others in the community. |

Absolutely! I'm at the feed mill/grain elevator in Hecla. I'll PM you the price - not sure if I can post that??? |

Location: Tumbleweed Capital of the World | I wonder how/if this will affect the Bonus Race Finals... I know Renea is saying watch your horses, have your vaccinations up to date, etc., but a big event like that could be detrimental to keeping it under control. :( |

| I know there are girls with potentially exposed horses, continuing to travel. Your best bet is to STAY HOME for a FEW weeks like the vets have asked..... Correct this is only an outbreak, but just like any highly contagious virus, it will become an epidemic if we are not careful! I would hate to see this thing drawn out for months into the summer, because of people who think they can outsmart, out disinfect, outplan this vuris's path! |

Does anyone have an issues with getting them to eat it? I saw a couple descriptions of products that sad it has a strong odor and my boy is picky. |
