Which do you use. I am using hay but I work at tractor supply and the bags of pellets or cubes are $3 cheaper than hay. My mare is a real easy keeper she keeps her weight so easy. A bale lasts me a week with her. Would I be going through the bags more than a bale a week how does it work. How do you feed them like how much? She is around 1250 lbs

Will I go through more bags of cubes or pellets (50lb bags) a week than I will a bale of hay a week.

Thank you :)

I've always heard that the hay is better than the pellets/cubes. If she is an easy keeper and doing well on the straight source, I'd keep it that way.

I would weigh how much alfalfa hay you are feeding and then weigh the equivalent pellets or cubes.  Or call Standlee Hay and ask them.  But I believe they will tell you that the pellets or cubes are the same equivalent to long stem hay by weight.  So feed the same weight of cubes/pellets that you are feeding hay.  My horses waste way too much of the hay so I started feeding pellets.  I have found it best to wet/soak them though.  That is something to consider if using pellets or cubes.

The point in Feeding hay is for forage... and for them to be able to eat graze on hay or grass thru out the day.. Horses are grazers..  Pellets are not to replace hay for forage. its to help with the nutrition or calories or protein but not the forage aspect of it. now if you have lush pastures thats another thing where they can graze all day or alot...but if not then No its not to "Be Instead of hay" unless horse cant chew hay.

Cubes are a bit better but still do not give them the aspect of forage and grazing etc
edited to spell check..
