Me, too!  I sure don't know exactly what happened but apparently  careful and/or use common sense wasn't one of the driver's strong points on that trip which is proven by the fact that he had 8 horses loaded up in that trailer.

The roads where this happened have a lot of sharp curves and it's often foggy.  Looks like he didn't allow enough room for the trailer to cheat in the turn and ran one side of it up a hill on the shoulder causing it to flip.   So sad for those poor horses and owners. Fortunately for the survivors they were close to Alamo Pintado Equine Hospital. Stuff like this is why no one hauls our horses but my husband or me.

I don't know why that driver would choose THAT route. There are several much more trailer-friendly roads he could have chosen. My husband and I are both from SB originally and I don't like driving that road in my SUV, you'd never get me on it with a 7 horse.

So sad

I've been down that road and it is very narrow with sharp hairpin turns.  I was driving a big rig double screws with a 28 van trailer, but it was still very close.
But if you saw the video the man said he was unformular with the area since he was from AZ and also his gps took him that way.  I hate gps they don't take in considerations with what type of vehicle you are driving nor how long it might be.
Prayer for the horses that they were able to get to the AP vet.

So sorry about this happening. Not being there we can't really judge if the driver was at fault. He didn't get fined so the police obviously didn't think he was at fault.
But there is something to say for trusting the GPS too much. I know a bunch of long haul truckers, and they will map out the route before leaving. (Also to know where gas stations are, but also to "see" the road before getting there. We all know GPS is not perfect.
Also, they one line that states he had 8 horses on there is not repeated in the rest of the story. And they are talking about 2 dead and 5 who were transported to the vet. So maybe he didn't have 8 on there.
Anyway, I feel for the owners of the horses. And lets hope they will finally put up more signs on that (and other dangerous) roads.
Just a sad deal al around.

I noticed that two. They said one was dead on scene, one euthanized, and 5 transported to vet clinic. So I dont know about the 8 in a 7 horse issue. They also reported he used his GPS that took him there and I know mine has done this to me.

Living in MN my GPS took me in the middle of winter down a minimum maintenance road, meaning not plowed. Luckily I made it because when I turned onto it, it was dark and I had to either go forward for surely get stuck.

Prayers for the owners and for the driver.

Didn't think you tried to be nasty, I was just stating what was in the article.
And I agree, I don't like it when people overload their trailers. Professional or not, it is just not safe for the horses!

Many coastal roads in California are like that.  I'm from northern California and spent many years hauling a trailer from the coast into the valley for shows.  The signage is there, but people don't pay attention to it.  Not that it was a problem in this case since it was so early in the morning, but you also end up with sightseers along these roads that have no patience for trailers and will ride up your a$$ and pass on blind spots.  It can be scary.

Definitely prayers.   Not trying to pick at straws, but the video said a total of 7 horses...but typos do happen. It really is sad, and I hope that the remaining 5 horses fully recover.
