So back in January, I sold a trophy saddle to a local girl from my area - just because it didn't fit my horse. She rode in it, she loved it, she bought it - and because I know her pretty well and she's a young gal working hard, she's been making monthly payments. She's ALMOST got it half paid off.

Then she texts me today saying that the tree is "warped" and it doesn't fit her horse.

Whose fault is this? What would you do? If I had any thoughts there was something WRONG with the saddle I would have just set it in my office to look at. I feel bad, but I sure don't want it back...

Can trees even warp? I mean, this isn't a junk saddle - it's a Cactus, not a Double T. Lol

That's a crummy situation, but you should be paid out the rest of what she owes you. I will never let anything go on a payment plan because of things like this. After 6 months, it's kind of a you break it you buy it deal. I would expect my money.

I'm guessing it all depends on the care it's given. It fit her horse before right? Even so I would make her pay the remaining... She likely should take it up with the saddle company though

I DO expect my money. Lol. I just want to make sure I'm right in doing so. I feel like it's been four months and it just NOW doesn't fit? It probably didn't for when she bought it - but I feel like that's not my fault either. When I buy a saddle I'm super picky and aware of how my horse moves and feels and everything - WHEN I TRY IT OUT

She says now it's too tight on him. Which maybe it for when she bought it - then as he got fitter and gained muscle it got too tight? I don't know....

I feel badly about it, but....

You're not a bad person for wanting your money. She's in the wrong for taking advantage of the situation.

I honestly have no clue about the original fit. I dropped it off with her, went and ran a few errands, when I went back to pick it up she said she loved it. I never saw it on the horse.

IMO it should not take 3 months to figure out if a saddle fits a horse.

That is something you can figure out in one to two rides...or at least within a week.

I am going through the process of finding a saddle that fits my horse and I knew the second I put that sucker on him it fit like a glove.

I wish you luck!

I would start the conversation off with saying that you expect full payment at this point since the saddle is not in the same condition it started in.

OR you could say you will take the saddle back, but keep the money she has already paid you since the saddle has been used.

This is rotten.  Take the saddle back, don't return the money you've received and either set it in your house to look at or resell it.  She's feeding you a line of BS about it being warped.

No need to say you probably learned your lesson on payments.

You can do one of two things....pray she pays you what she should and what she owes.  And if the saddle is made by cactus I am certain they will help if the tree is actually warped.  Her paying it off is the right thing to do.

Or you could avoid risking that she will never pay you, take the saddle back, try to keep what she has given you, or give it back and sell the saddle to someone else.  Unless of course the saddle is in poor condition since it left you.

Yes, saddle trees CAN warp if it is a rawhide covered tree. That being said, depending on the age of the saddle it would have warped long before this time. They usually warp from too wet rawhide covering and it warps the tree as it dries. My guess is that it didn't fit at first and she is just noticing it more as the horse's back has changed. I would tell her that she has two options......

one: she can pay for the saddle as agreed and sell it.....or two: you will take the saddle back but she does NOT get a refund.

If it had been within a couple of weeks, it would be a different story.

If you want to take the saddle back, I wouldn't tell her she isn't getting her moneys back till you have saddle in hand. She probably won't be paying the balance owed.......in either case.

Yep.  Go over and tell her you'll take the saddle off her hands.  Talk to her face to face and don't let her know she isn't getting her money back.

You are not at fault in any way in this deal. You trusted this girl with your saddle. You trusted her to pay you. If the saddle didnt fit she would have know in the first week of having it, the saddle tree just dont get warped over a a few months, she would have know the saddle was wraped after a few rides. I hope that the saddle is still in the same shape as when you left it with her. Go pick it up and do not refund any money back to her. This is the money that is owed to you for losing a sale from someone else. So just go pick up your saddle and be done with this deal.
Just wonering how long did you give her to pay off the saddle? Just dont let anybody else do payments.

What Cactus is it?  I may be interested.

It's just a Cactus barrel saddle - not a specific person's, like a Charmayne. But it has a round skirt like a Charmayne.
