I have a nice 5 star pad, & have recently discovered my horse is allergic to wool.

What is the best pad to use, keeping this in mind?

I use professional choice air ride saddle pads with a felt underside. Maybe that would be good? I don't know what its made out of, but its a very nice pad.

Did you do allergy testing?

LOL! love the 5 star, going to use it on someone else.

no, didn't have him tested.
did have him tested last year, he is allergic to wood by products. so he has to have pelleted shavings.
tried the corn cobs but not much of a difference from the pellets.

he just itches really bad where the pad goes, so I just assume, that's an allergy? didn't have a problem until I started using the 5 star. stopped using it, gave him a bath with selson blue medicated and haven't had a problem.

It could be the dye, or chemicals used in the processing of the pad. I wouldn't jump to the conclusion of a wool allergy without the proper testing.

If you have something that is working right now and you are content, that is good.

Ladies, ladies, we all want the allergy pad but I am curious as to what color it is as well. Could the color from the dye be making him itchy (if it is indeed colored)?

Just wanted to add, wool sweaters make me itchy as all heck so wondering if he's just sensitive. Sometimes the fibers can awkwardly poke around and maybe that's the problem.

If its blue then I bet its the dye and it won't work for any of her horses so she should sell it to me.

My mare hates a wool or felt bottom pad too. I love my ESP pad but she does not; have to put a fleece or fuzzy under-liner underneath it. Without it, she's tail swishy, gets a little bucky, stamps her feet, even tried to rub me ( and the saddle ) off on a tree while starting a trail ride! With the under liner, or a fleece bottom pad, she's perfect :)

well, its black :)

and last year I bought him a draper therapy stable sheet. he wears it, all the time.
thinking back, he didn't have any white spots., now, he has about 10 white spots on each side of him, from his shoulder to his butt. He doesn't have any on his neck. It is 56% Celliantยฎ (Polyester), 44% Nylon.

I had a 5 star mohair cinch last year, he got cinchy, and he has tons of white spots through the girth area.
I got him an air flex, cinchyness went away.

and now, I tried the 5 star pad, he got itchy, terribly after I would take it off.
He is .. slightly bronc-y. Hes grown up a lot this year, he hasn't bucked hard, just humps up occasionally, but hasn't done it in a much this year.

Last year I was using a saddle right pad.

well if he's allergic to wool you might try a best ever FELT pad, not sure if they still make them, they don't last long but it might work for you. Try finding a poly felt/fleece or you could try neoprene? I think won pad is neoprene oh and those tacky-too pads? CSI used to make a foam liner for their pads...oh and doesn't impact gel have felt pads? not sure what else I can think of!

I would put a liner under the 5 star. Doesn't Draper therapy have a liner pad?

BOT has pad liners as well.

You could try a neoprene pad or felt.  IDK what brands to suggest.
