My brood mare I just got has pulled out at least 50% of my mares tail. I brood mare by her self now but what can I used to help my poor mares tail grow back? Someone suggested MTG and I had a little left in a bottle from a couple years ago when my gelding had got hives from something and lost his hair in those spots. It helped that. I put some on her tonight and *dont laugh* but it smelled like Smoked Sausage but I also think my horses Prevacox pills smells just like like bacon lol. So I had daddy smell it and he said it smelled like something that had been smoked. Anyone that's used it is that what it smells like or is mine too old? Is MTG the best stuff or is there something better?

Every bottle that I've used smells like a burning brush pile to me so I bet it's just the MTG.

IDK how to describe the smell, but I make a point to wear gloves when I use it because I will smell like it for days!! Stinky Stinky!! and its super oily, so my horse will be greased up lookin' for like 2 weeks if im not careful!! Love the stuff though!

Yes, it's nasty, and my personal opinion is that it does not make hair grow...

I should also add that you need to read ALL the fine print (if you havent already!) I made the mistake of skimming over the bottle, and when I used it a few years ago on my horses blanket rubs I turned him out. couple of days later his hair was FALLING OUT instead of growing back! I checked the bottle again and it said do not apply if the horse is going to be in direct sunlight... I guess it caused him to burn :( needless to say I lost all chances at the horse owner of the year title!!

Ok. I wasn't sure. I could remember what it smelled like before so I wanted to make sure. Do you think it helps?

I know a multiple APHA world champion that swears by it and has tail before/after pictures that are pretty dang impressive. I haven't used my bottle in years..

It smells like old bacon grease. But I think it works. It's really good for dry skin

About 10yrs ago when I was showing a lot I used mtg on my geldings mane and had a slinky and blanket on at all times trying to keep him black and not sun bleached, 2 days after applying mtg, took off his slinky and his mane came with it!! I literally threw up, 80% of his mane had fallen out!! I was devastated and therefore will never touch the stuff again! Sure did make banding and braiding a quick and easy job though, I laugh and joke now but cried every time I combed his mane for a whole year!!

One of the main ingredients is sulfur, and yes, it's supposed to smell like a deep pit BBQ. I have had it work for mane and tail re-growth, but not for some other things like rain scald and this weird bald patch that my colt has gotten from laying down in his pee spot constantly.

It has burned both horses I tried it on too - no new hair growth - hair LOSS if anything.

We use it here all the time.  No bad results.  Of course after reading all of the bad things that have happened to people on here, we really followed the directions.  My husband uses it on his cutting mares because they react to flies, knats, etc.  It keeps them off.

I use it a lot. I have one that gets greasy heel and it works. Also helped me grow a nice mane and tail on another. I always thought it smelt like Smokey bacon. Wear gloves the smell lingers

Whoa! Why would it cause the mane and tail to fall out? My sister just bought it for her gelding cause he has a skimpy mane and tail.

DITTO!!!  I put it on a mare that I had, it completely BURNT her hair, and also her skin!

It was horrible, needless to say it got thrown away and we will NOT be repurchasing any!

It works wonderfully, but it smells awful. I can't use it on my gelding because he has a reaction to it, starts kicking as soon as I put it on him. He's the only horse I've ever had that had a reaction to it.

My guess is a lot of horses must be allergic to it? - I followed the directions to a T also - STILL burned him.

I have heard so many bad stories on how it burned someone horse that I just stay away from it.  Never used it, and not going to take a chance on it.

As with any chemical horses to react, that is why you should spot test to ensure your horse will not or does react then you can choose to use or not
