I've been looking to buy a weanling from some people near me with a very nice FG stud. I've been on a waiting list for a certain mare's baby and was hoping for a filly. The mare foaled recently and had a colt. He looks like a nice colt so now I'm torn...do I get the colt or wait another year or more for the mare to have a filly?Which gender do you all prefer when buying a prospect? Or does it even play into your decision?

I want fillies, but thats probably because the last 3 years I've only had colts.

colts for me. I just get along with them better. I haven't ridden a mare of my own for 10 yrs or better. I had 2 nasty witchy mares to grow up with and raised a gelding out of one of them and he is a dream. Just never wanted another mare.

While waiting for a bus, the blind man's dog decided to go to the bathroom all over the blind man's legs.A passerby commented to the blind man, "What! That dog just went to the bathroom all over your legs, and you are petting him?! Are you crazy?"To which the blind man replied, "Madam, I am not petting him, I am feeling for his bottom, so I can kick him."

I prefer fillies, and wanted a FDF filly last year. I got a sorrel colt with a bunch of chrome. I love that stinking horse! when BUYING horses, I look for fillies or mares. When breeding, I hope for fillies but who am I kidding, all the babies steal my heart :P. In fact, I was way closer to my colt than I was the filly we had.

Although if I get to breed one of mine to ASOF in the future, I'm hoping for a colt!

I tend to be closer to my boys so normally I lean more towards colts/geldings, but the advantage to a filly would be having the option to breed her in the future. Decisions, decisions! lol

Colt!!  I prefer geldings. I have mares, some are good, others are a nightmare. My geldings just have more consistent dispositions.  No hormonal issues.

We definitely prefer the fillies so of course Doc gives us mainly colts, people who breed to him get the fillies.  We feel  a mare may have a few off days here and there, but the try and grit she has on the good days outweigh that.  Also, if she gets hurt we have another option for her instead of expensive fertilizer.  Third, we have 3 yearling colts and 2 two yr olds that all need castrated, so looking at a hefty vet bill that would not incur with a filly.

Financially speaking, I would probably want a filly.

Experience speaking, I would want a colt.  I have never gotten along with mares.  (I was also younger and I'm sure they took full advantage of me)  I have only ever had two mares in my life and I have also only ever sold two horses in my life.  I get hormonal enough for just myself... don't need to double that!

Depends on the situation----I prefer to ride a gelding but have been riding fillies forever. Seems like I sell all the colts and end up riding the fillies that I have kept back for future broodies. We do not buy broodmares but rather breed for them---just recently I bought a broodmare and it was the first one I had bought in 12 years---cuz she was a daughter of Dash For Perks and out of a Jet Of Honor daughter---had to have her. LOL.

As much as I love the mare I race now, if we breed her, I want a Colt first, then if he is a nice horse, I may consider trying again for a filly. They are so unpredictable with the hormones and mood swings, but when they try, they try HARD and will give their all for you, but it has to be on their terms, while a gelding is more likely to be a strong competitor all the time, which is the major downside to my mare. I also like mares because they are much more personable I think. So it doesn't really matter to me, mares are good for their post career options.

Personally I get along better with colts/stallions/geldings. I do have a 3 year old filly and the ONLY reason I have her is because she is identical attitude etc to my stallions (they are by the same sire). If I didn't know her bloodlines inside out I would not have bought her. I will break down in a year or so and buy a filly/mare so I can cross them on my stud...I'm holding out for one from Mightybroke!

Depends on the mare for me. Some I want fillies from and some colts. I have been so lucky so far with that too lol. I have a mare that has given me 3 colts in a row, one that has given me 3 fillies in a row and one that has given me 2 fillies in a row and is due any day (all exactly what I wanted from them). Of course, I just jinxed myself, but will probably blame you for that lol.

If you like the colt, get the colt. You can always sell him if it doesn't work out. I love little boys, they are sweeter than girls lol.

You're the culprit! Lol! I wanted her too. Like BAD. That was a heck of a deal on that mare.

I thought that mare was only a breeding lease. If you are talking the one here on bhw.

NO, you could buy her or she was offering the option of leasing her for a year---we bought her.
