Vet Check Questions

I went and tried a barrel horse yesterday & we are planning on buying it, I first want a vet check;
I have never had a vet check done so I'm wondering what key areas should I ask about & request x-rays on?

Make sure you let the vet know what you are going to use the horse for then depending on the cost of the horse how much you want to spend on x rays etc. Hocks woould be one thing I would x ray for sure.

Tell him you are wanting a prepurchase exam.. and remember depending on age of horse there might be some issues that need maintenance etc.. make sure you get vet records etc from owner before you decide.. hocks might be fusing etc but thats normal .. alot of xrays on hocks wont come clean but its ok as long as fusing is maintained.
feet are important as well.
then decide ...

I would x-ray hocks, knees and feet. Also x-ray the back to check for kissing spine. I would also have him scoped for airway or bleeding issues.

I would have a scope done also! To check for respiratory problems. Purchased a horse in October. Did a pre-purchase exam with some radiographs and we missed my horse have Inflammatory Airway Disease which is found in many performance horses. Huge set back for us and may potentially end his ability to barrel race. Definitely would scope and check blood along with the regular flexion test/radiographs!
