Who has a 2 Y O horses on the race track?  How tall and long is it?

Two years ago I liquidated my horses by giving them away.  However, one friend got 3 horses from me and we have partnered up on some races this year with the QH gelding.  This colt spent his weanling and yearling year turned out on pasture and very little grain to none.  He is smaller than  my friends sale prep horses he bought last fall. I provided the horse, my buddy took care of him until training time and he is training the horse, I am paying futurity payments and he keeps the horse after racing.  We split $$$ (if there are any winnings) 50/50 after jockey fee.

When I crossed the mare and the stallion, I was hoping for a bigger horse in height.

He is 15-1 and about 65 inches long.  Seems short in height to me compared to the others.

The good thing he is beating the others in works.  He seems to do everything right.  We don't know how fast he is but he is trying.

Had a screw up Saturday.   It was his last gating before his first race.  He stands with his feet spread I think to far apart so we were trying to adjust him.  The gate to the starting gates was broken so a person was holding the spring bar and the tesion released the gate when we and the jockie weren't ready.  The gate cracked open and he was a gone Johnson, with the jockie falling off on the first jump.

Looking at the bright side he got a good 350 + work with no weight on his back and ran straight, LOL.  About 50 yards from the gate he bucked up twice enjoying his freedom.

This is my last race horse and I have always want to go run at the All American trials so we are.  He may not be that quality but it will be an exciting and enjoyable day with a good memory and that is all I want.

Race time in 1 1/2 weeks!  Can't wait!

Well good for you! I hope he makes at least a good showing if he doesn't go ahead and win the whole darn thing! Then they can make a movie about you like Mine That Bird

NEVER let the horses size scare or worry you. My boss owns a little TB gelding that ran into some soundness issues last year, but he got the winter off and is coming back in a few weeks to run, this little dude can flat SCOOT. He is maybe 15.1 on a good day, and has out worked several 16.2 + horses.

Have fun with your boy, I have watched your videos of him on facebook, he looks nice!!!

We sold a full sister to a stakes horse last year super cheap because she is miniature. I think maybe 13.2-3 hands, if that. Her full brother was a solid 16.3 if not taller. Anyway, she is entered for this weekend and her owner says she hasn't grown at all LOL!

Height doesn't really matter, efficiency of build does!

Corona Cartel is short, Royal Shake Em is short, a bunch of others are short. A short horse doesn't necessarily mean a small horse.

Good luck!!!

Yeah I learned that lesson when I was at Lazy E and my wife that doesn't know crap about horses but has a good eye for fast horses and told me to breed to Corona Cartel when he was $1500.  I thought he was to small.  The rest is history!  kicking myself!

The fastest 2yo that I rode in CO was a shorty.  If he was 14 hands I'll give you a kiss, Doug.  That horse was the favorite that year (1983) in the Colorado Gold (I think that was the name) and he was hot stuff when he hit the track.  He was so fast that he couldn't hold the turn on a 5/8 track and almost wrecked on our full speed work one time into a fence that was 50-60' outside the track.

When I was down in Louisiana picking up Lara I watched a couple races. The trainer had a little grey mare... she would be on tiptoes to be 14 hands, and she was built horribly. Everyone was chuckling at her... including myself, I was like what the heck and put $20 on her to support the trainer... We watched that little bugger blow the doors off everyone...

Next time you take him to the gait act like nothing happened.. and expect him to do good. Nothing bad happened to him he got to run and should remember it as a fun time. I only worked one summer at a TB track for Bud Delp - we shared the barn with D Wayne Lucas so the summer I did was a class A learning experience. let us know how he does and I agree with the others it's the size of the heart not the horse.

The only thing that is "free" on the backside is the gates!  We stand our horses in the gates quite a bit.  Let's them know them big things aren't monsters that are going to EAT them. Good luck in the futurity.

It makes sense that he is going to be smaller than a sales prep horse. When I prepped in Kentucky, feed was poured into them, they were exercised regularly, and groomed within an inch of their lives. I believe your horse still has some growing to do. I always like the trainer who told me to make sure their mind was right and the body would catch up. Good luck and have fun!!!

Maybe I should change my statement.  When he goes to the track before trials he will walk through the open gates and stand for a brief moment then gallop off.  He won't be locked in and backed out because right now he doesn't know that he can be backed out.  Only running forward.  Picture 3 weeks ago

I have a friend with a AAA filly who is probably 15 even and little. Made right, but not wide, not heavy, she's just little everywhere. Looks like a jr rodeo horse down the road. Anyway, with her little legs and little barrel, this thing can fly. Sound too. I'm just saying, who knows. Not the size of the dog in the fight, but the size of the fight in the dog. Good luck! The AA is a dream of mine too!

I have a 7 year old QH mare in my barn right now that stands 14.1 with her shoes on and weights in at about 900 lbs.  She currently runs barrels.  She ran on the track her 2 thru 4 year old year.  She has a fairly impressive performance/earnings record with speed indexes in the nineties. She retired 100% sound.   Her size is purely a fluke as her genetics dictate that she be 16+ hands and stout.   She is all guts and grit and we never told her she was too petite!!

If there is a way to do your schooling race or a soft in the gates work with company where the futurity is held ... do it .... gates at the track are hydrolic or air operated and make a whooshing sound which can make green colts suck back in the gates and leave last or just stand there ... as you know a blink of the eye can lose you the race before it is ever run ... you do not want to run full out at these prep races... easy does it! ... just get approved by the stewards to run a real race ... lol ...

As you can see my filly is just beginning to show what I call the triple ripple on her shoulders which is the first signs of gaining muscle while in training then you get the under the ribs tight tummy muscles and then the rear end begins to show individual muscling .... all three shows overall conditioning ....

I opted to do later in the year futurities to allow knees to close and mental maturity running in company and gating ... and there will be some very fast horses get injured in the early races that may not be competing in the later futurities .... so less competition ... lol

I am paying into the Speedhorse in July, Pot-O-Gold in September and then the Lone Star in the late fall .... if everything goes well .. will keep her tuned up by running in a stakes race or two ... or a maiden if she does not win one of the previous futurities ..
maiden races at Okla tracks can pay more than stakes races ... lol ..

http://racing.apha.com/calendar

Is your colt one of your nicely bred appys?? ... Appy's are dangerous contenders here and we hate to see when 2-3 are in a race together with our paints ... lol

Work your plan with your nice colt and try for the perfect race which usually wins with these green babies exploding like a covey of quail out of the gates and playing bumper cars with each other .....

GOOD LUCK ...
I will loan you my race horse prayer ...

Dear Lord,
If you let me win this race tonight ...
I will make you a partner ..
AMEN

C YA IN THE WINNERS CIRCLE!!
