Location: Oxford, Kansas | A friend of mine has an older gelding that is having trouble eating hay and so it was reccomended from her vet that she feed chopped hay. We are looking for ideas on how to chop up some hay because the bagged stuff you can buy is rather pricey. Ideas? |

| Most chopped hay is turned to silage. Silage will kill a horse. |

You just got to get mean and mean it.
Location: Arkansas | If she has access to some Chafhay, that would be good for him. If you don't know what it is, Google is your friend.

If done daily it would be fine. Just dont let it ferment or you will have a dead horse in hours. |

Chopping hay and making sylage is two totaly different things.
With sylage (or we are acatualy talking haylage) gets cut in swaths, and not allowed to dry like hay. You now have two options. We put the hay through a sylage cutter and then take the bits to a pit or pile where it is drove over and packed to remove air so frementing ocous and not rotting, its cover in a thick plastic and left to cure. The other option is to bale it or chop it and put it in plastic tubes (bales) or tightly packed bags. Chafhay is acatualy haylage.
To chop hay you just process cured bale regularly hay, we have a bale shredder to feed the cows and horses, the horse bale will last 1 to 3 weeks depending on the group and how many are there, cows eat it all daily but theres way more lol.
If you have a neibour with a bale shredder (processor) you could ask them to shread a round bale for you. The other option is to find out whom does the custom tub grinding inyour area, but they may not come for just one bale. We will sometimes tub grind up a weeks worth of hay for the dairy barn at a time when things are really busy. |

| I also feed the Hydration Hay. Love it and my horses love it, plus I wet it and that is just more hydration in their system. It is pricey, but I don't use what they say either as I mix it with their grain. It has done wonders for my old guy. |
