Location: Somewhere between raising hell and Amazing Grace | A handful of board members might recall my threads from last year about my then three year old Streaking Six gelding who fractured his sinus cavity and face bones. The hole to his airway closed up in the fall of 2013. The two newer pics are from yesterday. There is still a very slight hole there but it's not open and has not drained in about 8-10 weeks!! This all started in March of 2013 and still isn't over! I forget the length of the hole originally after we got done debriding it and removing all the bone fragments. It tracked from the outside of his face, through his sinus cavity and into his airway. Poor guy could breathe through the side of his face. Every time we tried stitching the skin closed around it he would have a violent reaction to the sutures. So we had to take the long route.
Vet's told me it could be six months, a year, or even two years before it was 100 percent healed. Looks like we are going to be the latter. But I don't care! He's doing awesome. Thanks to some amazing vets!!!! (My public thank you to Dr. Ty Wallis).

I haven't updated it yet in 2014. I was so caught up in dealing with my own health issues and surgery that I got behind on it.

It was so good of you to get him to a vet even though most people (me included) would have probably shrugged it off as it looked like a minor injury at first (if my memory serves me right.) It looks so much better. Kudos to you for taking such good care of him!  |

Location: stray dump capital of the world | I remember this, too! He looks great! We came home one evening 7 years ago to find my mare in the avatar with a fractured face just to the inside of her right eye socket. As they cut into her face to see the damage, bone fell out. We could see a good 8 inches into her nasal cavity as the bone had fallen out. The vet took each piece and like a puzzle methodically chose pieces that fit in a spot and wired her face together. My husband stayed with the mare the entire time. I would walk out when they drilled directly into her head to wire the pieces to a solid bone. They warned us that her body could reject the bone and pieces might die off and rupture through the skin, but it didn't. She healed beautifully. She has an 8 inch scar from the stitches, a couple of knots of wire that you can feel when you rub her face, and a scar where they attached a tube to flush the cavity out. All of these are very minimal and I am just so thankful to still have her. They did all of this between the hours of 10 and midnight because as you know, horses can't hurt themselves during regular hours, and the nearest vet hospital is 3 hours away. Prayers that your boy continues to heal. |

I couldn't remember if I had shared or not. I'm getting old. lol I'm happy your boy is healing. I love my little mare so much, and I'm very grateful to still have her. |
