I've got a two year old cow bred stallion who is awesome to handle on the ground, however, sometimes when I am just out in the pasture petting him or walking with him, he'll all of a sudden become playful and rear up and strike out toward me, sometimes charging toward me and biting my shoulder and clothes. How do I break him of this foolish inappropriate behavior toward me? He is the calmest boy when I lead him, but when the halter comes off he becomes disrespectful in his pen.

At 2 years old... he is not a stallion yet... even tho he thinks he is... If you can't handle a colt, perhaps owing a stallion is not for you..

Carry that 2 x 4, or at least a lunge whip, with you at all times, and be ready to use it as you are letting him go. Don't take his halter off, just unclip his lead. Actually, I think I'd start the retraining in a round pen and get him over the disrespect from the ground up. If one of my young stallions shows me the slightest disrespect we have a come to Jesus meeting, even if it means, #1, I wear myself out chasing and yelling and throwing anything available at him, or #2, he gets a little hurt (scrape, bruise, no cuts) on the second time round. If you let a young stallion get away with the first bad thing, especially such blatant disrespect, it can mean the end of him ever being a good show horse, let alone dangerous for life. You can effectively 'round pen' even in a half acre pen. You'll get tired, but it's better than letting this colt get away with disrespect.

I've got to ask how old are you? How many years have you been around horses? This horse doesn't even really know he is a stallion yet. You need to get his respect before the hormone really start flowing!

I love your words of advice, especially when 'you have a come to Jesus meeting...' LOL. I am right there with you!

What do you mean he isn't a stallion? He has already dropped good sized asteroids, and not only that he lets his log hang down and squats his hind legs when the heifers come over, letting out nicker or two (and running the heifers away). Now tell me, he is just a colt? I care to differ. This beast has attitude and must be from the stinking Two Eyed Jack three times in his pedigree.

He needs to respect you. It sounds like he needs the round pen to me.....the patience tree for bad behavior.......and, possibly a nut removal.
