Hi all I was wondering if anyone has had the Mirena IUD? I have been having terrible periods for the last two years and my GYN has recommended going to the Mirena before getting more aggressive with an ablation. I have tried the pill and it did no do well as it interacted with one of my other medications. So the other options were IUD, endometrial ablation or hysterectomy. I am not planning on having kids so either surgery doesn't seem like a big deal to me and had originally opted to do the ablation, but he has since talked me into doin the IUD first since he had to get an endometrial tissue sample prior to any surgery anyway and unfortunately he could not get the sample in the office. It seems I have stenosis of the uterus....who knew? I guess my big question is I have read that the Mirena can lead to mood changes and I am worried about this as I already am MOODY and have crazy awful PmS etc. My doctor says that because the progesterone is not systemic it does NOT effect mood etc. kind of nervous about all of this but I am more tired of hellacious periods !

My niece had one & had horrible cramping & pain throughout.  She ended up getting pregnant with hers still in & had some complications that they attributed to the IUD.

I had one placed after our daughter was born in 2005. Zero issues. I had very light cycles, though I would not count on the IUD to give you a lighter cycle. It protected us just fine. Had it removed in 2009, we were ready for another one, but it would have been time to change it in 2010 anyhow. We were expecting by early 2010, so no complications afterward either. Now, my second two children were premature and this has now been linked to the huge Mirena lawsuit, but there is no proof that it is to blame. I would recommend them, as I had no problems what so ever with mine.

ETA- I had no mood changes or weight gain with my IUD.

I have had a Mirena IUD since 2006 I had it removed in 2008 had a second baby then a second one placed in 2009. I have really liked it and have had no complications. They last for 5 years. I had horrible cramps before. I would definatly give it a try before surgery.

I have had one since August 2012, after our second child. I LOVE it! I have not had any issues with it at all and have little to no cycle. Before having the Mirena I had very heavy cycles with lots of horrible cramps.

I had the ParaGard IUD up until last Weds when I had it replaced with the Mirena. I would SOOOOOO do the IUD over something permanent that you can't undo. The ParaGard was okay but my periods were heavy and after 4.5 years, I was over it. It's not *that* big of a deal pain wise. I took some IB Profin, had one removed, AND had one inserted and it lasted less than 60 seconds. I was a little sore the next day but for light to no periods, I'd totally take it!

Got my first one in 2005, and am currently on the second one. Love it!!
Having it put in was not fun, I do have to say that. It hurts like a b&^ch, but it is worth it.
No periods (maybe 2 or 3 a ear, that last a day...) and no cramping at all!

Mood swings... well... you'd have to ask my husband.... but I don't think I have them....

Not to steal the thread, but has anyone who hasn't had a child yet but plans to in the future used it? Having a hard time on the pill hormones, my body hates it. Doctor recommend the mirena,'I'm worried about it moving around because I am VERY active!

I personally have not tried it but plan on getting it this summer. My aunt got one after her last pregnancy and had no problems at all and my sister just got it and was very crampy and was spotting in the beginning but she said everything's fine now!

I have had my Mirena since 2010. I love it and plan to get another one when it's time to have it removed. I went from heavy, frequent periods to no periods in almost 4 years. Occasional light spotting for 1-2 days.

I put Mirenas in a lot of my patients as well. Most of them do well with it. Like any type of medicine some people don't do well with it. But compared to all the other forms of birth control I honestly think I see less adverse effects with the Mirena.

I had it and HATED it. Yes it made my periods very light and maybe just one to two days but I didn't like the randomness of my cycle even if it was just spotting. Also I would have random (almost contraction) like cramping. It wasn't bad all the time but when it did cramp it was a "holy freaking crap there is an exorcism happening in my uterus" type of feeling. Finally begged my gyn and insurance to let me get it taken out :)

Now I'm happily on the pill again

I have not had a child... and plan on it in the future... My gyn was reluctant to do it but I finally got her to. I am sure it was much more painful getting it put in since I had not ever had a child but I have 0 pain now and don't even know its there. Doesnt bother me riding..going to the gym.. or anythinge else.

I had mine put in in '09 after our daughter was born. It's due to come out. I'm suree i'll have a 2nd put in. It's so easy. Don't have to remember to take any pills or getting shots and patches. It's in, it's done, forget it for 5 years. Little to no period most months. The only negative thing I've heard is that it decreases sex drive...? Other then that, no weight gain, no "abnormal" moodiness  I love it.

I can't help with the Mirena, but I do have a copper T inserted. Love it! However: If your period is giving you hell, have you thought about a depoprovera shot? I was on depo for like 4 years and it dried my period up in just a few months.

My only complaint is my sex drive has gone down. I got mine in January 2012 after our first child was born. I am very active and have never had a problem with it. I had cramps and bleeding after having it put in, then I had a regular period the first 3 months, then nothing! I had very heavy, crampy periods before.

My best friend is on it........I know she has had a few complications with it. You might try the depo shot.....I get it 4 times a year (every 3 months) and it's just a shot in the hip. I haven't had any issues with it at all
